it's extraordinary how far ahead of the next countries the UK and USA are in the categories measuring countries. I mean, they would obviously be at the top, but they are miles ahead of the third place-holders.

And why is Birmingham so high as a city? Huh, @Brum? What's that about?

Question: what does "(not set)" mean? It's obviously measuring a particular country or city or whatever the chart is for, but why does it not show it?

Oi, Windows is great as a mobile OS! I have used Android, IOS, and Windows phones and Windows is the best. Well yes I'll admit they do still have Explorer as the default browser, and yes no one makes any apps for them ever, but still, I like the layout :p.

These stats are really interesting. Thanks for posting!

I think there are a couple of reasons why US and UK dominate.

    1) lots of zoos and related facilities. I mean LOTS.

    2) English speaking countries.

Other countries such as France, Netherlands, Germany all have lots of zoos too - but English isn't their first language, so we aren't quite as likely to get as much traffic from those countries.

Also, the Brits are just crazy about their zoos.

I think this chart shows the history fairly well - traffic from the UK picked up strongly in 2008 and really took off in 2009 and 2010.

    upload_2017-5-18_22-28-44.png

Things were pretty even through 2011 - 2014 and then the UK started to pull away again since 2015.

Interestingly, if you look at the same chart showing users rather than pageviews, you get a slightly different picture. We've always had more visitors from the US (thanks primarily to Google), they just don't generate anywhere near as much traffic (pageviews and posts) as our UK members have.

    upload_2017-5-18_22-30-54.png

More recently, we've started seeing a LOT more international search engine traffic, while in the past it was predominantly US and AU based.

There's various reasons behind that data - mostly it is because they either can't determine the value because it is ambiguous, or in some cases it simply isn't made available.

I'm not exactly sure why we might see multiple (not set) values in the location stats.

Notice how "rest of the world" is pretty much steady? That's not really surprising.

The US shows a fairly steady increase during the day with the peak being around 10pm US East Coast time.

UK gets a much higher peak (but a lower trough) with the peak being around 9pm in London - which is about what I would expect.

Not really surprising here - follows a similar pattern to many of my other sites ... Wednesday is the busiest day of the week for post traffic.

The dropoff on weekends is much less here than on my other sites - but then the majority of users on those sites are office workers and so tend to browse most while at work  (or while commuting)

Of course, this would also rob us of one of the most useful things which the new forum has given us; the ability to edit photographs and re-orientate them if the upload process has caused them to display upside-down or on their side.

And of course, one of the more recent consequences of the Great Purge was the fact that I created the "Species We Have Lost" thread in the European forums to (hopefully) provide an impetus for some of the most precious photographs to be reuploaded..... although so many members have come and gone in the intervening years that I am certain the vast majority of rare and unique photographs will never be restored.

I rather suspect the high level of activity there is due to the fact that the (now banned, thankfully) user Gulo Gulo was from that city - in which case Boston will presumably drop down a lot in the next year.

Not necessarily. I'm hoping the new software will be able to cater for this requirement.

Worst case scenario - we have a time delay where photos are hosted locally for a period during which they can be edited, before they are transparently "archived" at which point edits become disabled.

This may be a good reason to look at the solution my hosting provider is developing - basically they are looking to bring bulk storage options to their servers (for an additional fee), but which would mean that we can store photos "locally" and still manipulate them.

I think another key factor related to this is that there are other zoo forums in other languages. For example the German zoo forum Zoofreund and the French zoo forum Actu'Zoo. I have a feeling there's a Dutch one too, but I can't remember the name.

Note that the Most Messages list in the Notable Members area is inaccurate because it only counts forum posts and not gallery comments. Up until we migrated to the new platform in October last year, gallery comments were actually forum posts as well (and I'm hoping we can go back to that level of functionality in the future) - which is why I combine them together in the stats.
