The zoo will be inaugurating a brand new Komodo dragon interpretation center to complement the visit to their exhibit. This building will be full of informative panels and displays to conscience visitors about the endangerment these reptiles have and get to know them on a more personal level.

Coming soon to Barcelona... The Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus)! This exhibit will be built where the cheetah exhibit once was, right in front of the jaguars and leopards. The farm area has also been getting taken down recently, and a live pond for native wildlife is planned to be built over there, similar to what Oceanografic has. Is this the start of the discussed Mediterranean area? Seems like it!

    Invertebrate house inauguration!
"L’Espai Invertebrats" is being finally inaugurated! This new insect house at the zoo will feature 33 species in 30 different exhibits divided between a route going through the Mediterranean, Jungles, Islands, Butterfly exhibit, and Domestic environments.
The exhibits try to replicate each species' environment, the largest being the butterfly exhibit. The visit to the whole complex will last 30 minutes, more or less, and will include plenty of educative displays.
I'll ask around if a full species list of the building as for today exists, and I hope I can find anything!

    New individuals and renovations:
A male European otter (Lutra lutra lutra) has arrived to the zoo as part of the species EEP. The otter exhibit has also been slightly renovated and has been closed for quite some time, so it's the best time to go watch them!

I'd like to know if there will be native insects and invertebrates (and what will be the species displayed in this exhibit).

I do have access to an early species list while the building was still closed to the public, but take under account it might be outdated. I wish I had a better list that is updated to the current collection, because I'm sure some things have changed ever since I received it, but I hope you find this helpful:
    • European stick insect (Bacillus rossius)

    • Phyllium siccifolum

    • Mediterranean dung beetle (Bubas bison)

    • Mexican redknee tarantula (Brachypelma smithi)

    • Madagascar hissing cockroach (Gromphadorhina portentosa)

    • Orchid mantis (Hymenopus coronatus)

    • Common yellow scorpion (Buthus occitanus)

    • Protaetia affinis

    • European stag beetle (Lucanus cervus)

    • Hercules beetle (Dynastes hercules)

    • Old World swallowtail (Papilio machaon)

    • Atlas moth (Attacus atlas)

    • Bombus sp. (Native species)

    • Triops sp. (Native species)
    • Coccinellidae sp. (Native species)
Two Leafcutter ant species, three stick insect species, Cricket sp. and Grasshopper sp. were also mentioned, but not specified. Again, sorry for the incomplete information, but I hope we get to have a better list soon!

Bubas bison, Protaetia affinis and Lucanus cervus are very interesting. Especially the first one.

The only native species of Triops in Spain is Triops cancriformis.

    Development news:
Today starts the day of demolishing the Aquarama, one of the first-ever open-topped dolphinariums in Europe that has been the home of various bottlenose dolphins, California sea lions, fish and amphibians, and Ulisses the orca.
But demolition will give place to a set of new "reserve" exhibits so the renovation of the zoo on a bigger scale can start. These exhibits will house animals that will live here at the zoo but have to move from their current exhibits so new development can happen there, so they can still be on-show and properly housed while their old exhibits are being demolished/renovated.
The exhibits will be planned to be easily re-equipped so they can maintain as many species as possible. It will dispose of various rocks, logs, shade zones, and anything to adapt in case of being needed. It will consist of 3.500 m2 divided into 5 exterior paddocks and three sleeping quarters.
These exhibits are planned to be finished in 2024 and will cost 800.000€.

A man has been arrested for breaking into the zoo's elephant exhibit:
The zoo had just opened its doors, at ten in the morning, and the first visitors were beginning to enter. The workers discovered that an individual had slipped into the space of the pachyderms. Veterinarians and keepers of Susi, Yoyo and Bully managed to get the three female elephants away from the man, using one of the enclosure's compartmentalized spaces. "Our workers tried to get closer to demand that he get out of there, but seeing that it was impossible, we telephoned the Mossos d'Esquadra, who appeared at the moment," explains the zoo director, Sito Alarcón.
The man was not damaged and no one was hurt in the incident.
The last precedent is from 2014, when another person entered the lion's enclosure.

They're all fine, as I've seen them in good health long after that incident! :)

    Thanks!
Any chance you have more details about them?
I was able to find their names: RUN-RUN, NIMBA, ZALA, KIUMBE.
But can't find their days/places of birth.
I'm building a katanga lions database (europe).

News regarding the reptile house/ Terrari
Through Manel Aresté, the former coordinator, I've learnt that the reforms to this building have started this year. Now, while the original plan was to reform one half at a time, it turned out that the state of the pavilion is so hazardous that the entire thing will be done at once. He gives a prediction of 2-3 years for repairs to be finished (perhaps one wing at a time, I hope), but until then the building is off-limits, with the exception of the crocodile greenhouse.
Something else that should be noted is that he mentioned the collection may change, due to the advanced age of some animals (eg. Yacare caimans). However, he pointed out that a few, including the critically endangered Chinese alligator, Utila iguana and various Asian turtles, will remain.
However, I forgot to ask if they want to make part of it into a marine biodiversity center, as that was in talks for some time. I guess only time will tell.
