Finally we have some news about what is happening to the Atlantic Spotted Dolphin Calf that was rescued last July. Actually this news came a couple of weeks ago but I just discovered it now. She has been declared non releasable. She is going to be sent to the Dolphin Research Center in the Florida Keys, the attitude is that the large number of animals there will provide for a large number of possible pairings to give her the best possible opportunity for a social life. The DRC currently only has Bottlenose Dolphins. The animals are housed in saltwater lagoons that are home to other animals e.g. fish. Wild Dolphins also visit from time to time, so I'm hoping that there is a possibility, however slight, that she might run into another of her species from time to time. Also, she now has a name, Summer. Hopefully her young age will make it easy to fit in with the Bottlenoses. Rehabbing Animals | Clearwater Marine Aquarium Dolphin Research Center: Summer
The Church of Scientology is working against the aquariums plans to move to the downtown area. I find the whole thing incredibly funny even though I probably shouldn't. Church of Scientology works behind scenes against Clearwater Marine Aquarium | Tampa Bay Times
I think it's pretty funny too. Mostly I think they come off as jerks for trying to keep the area to themselves. Yeah, the aquarium is gonna attract tourists, but I doubt they'll swarm the area like locusts. It's a medium-sized(?) aquarium, not a large Six Flags theme park.
3 orphaned river otter kits have been rescued by the aquarium. They will be rehabilitated for about 6-9 months before being re-released. Clearwater aquarium rescues three otter kits
The Aquarium has abandoned plans to move downtown, supposedly due to not knowing how many years said project would take. They will instead upgrade their current facility. Clearwater Marine Aquarium scuttles plan to move to downtown Clearwater | Tampa Bay Times
The aquarium has broken ground on its expansion. The article doesn't say much, but a few pertinent points: it will cost $50 million, add 103,000 square feet of floor-space, and include a 1.5 million-gallon dolphin exhibit. Aquarium home of Winter the dolphin gets upgrade - Washington Times
Does anybody know the status of the upcoming expansion to the aquarium? I visited back in 2014 and found much of the place to be pretty underwhelming, but these new expansions sound promising.
When I was there earlier this year, it was still under construction. I did not see any opening dates.
A new male dolphin that had stranded with pneumonia in 2019 and deemed non releasable by the federal government due to hearing loss, has been transferred to Clearwater as his permanent home. This is great news for Nicholas, as this male dolphin has been solo for some time and it is so good for their social well being that male dolphins are bonded with other male dolphins. This brings the total of dolphins at the aquarium to 5. I assume all 5 will move into the new dolphin habitat once it is completed! Name Our New Resident Rescued Dolphin | Clearwater Marine Aquarium
According to their Instagram, Rudolph, a Rough-toothed dolphin rescued by Clearwater Marine Aquarium, will now be a permanent resident. If I recall correctly, this also makes it the second facility to house Rough-toothed dolphins, since Gulf World Marine Park is the only other place I know of in the continent that also keeps this species. All of the Bottlenose Dolphins at Clearwater Aquarium have now moved into the new 1.5 million gallon Ruth and J.O. Stone Dolphin Complex,
I am somewhat surprised that he was not placed at Gulf World with others of the same species. But Gulf World did try to transfer out a couple of them to Marineland Florida and it did not go so well. I wonder if one or more of Gulf World's will move to Clearwater as companions.
An article on the $80 million dolphin exhibit expansion that now has 1.5 million gallons of water spread throughout 5 connected pools: PGAV Destinations | Clearwater Marine Aquarium expansion | blooloop
Looks like a massive complex. So much better than their old tanks. I won’t lie and say I didn’t tear up seeing Winter swim into her new tank. Definitely can hold more dolphins as well. The old dolphin pools are slated to become manatee tanks in the near future.
