Last Saturday I went to Beauval, and I finally managed to see the female Yellow-backed Duiker. It's clearly a lifer for me, as I missed this species for many years. The male remains very shy, but I hope to see him in the following months.
The Augur Buzzards are still on show in the bird display "Les Maîtres des Airs". They appear at the beginning of the show, with other Buzzards and Crested Caracaras.
I announce that one of the Tasmanian Devils (CLUAN, one of the two male siblings that came from Copenhagen in 2019) died the 24th August 2022. Aged of nearly 5 years, he was quite old according to the life expectancy standards for this species.
Beauval recently imported 10 Milk Frogs Trachycephalus resinifictrix from Zurich Zoo. These critters started to breed a few hours after their arrival (!) and produced quickly at least 30 froglets.
In a recent newspaper article the director said that the visitor number has increased of 35 % compared to 2019 and the zoo is expecting to reach 2 millions at the end of the year. Other info heard in a radio record : gibbons will replace the flamingos (who will go in the giant aviary opening next year) on the island at the main entrance. I put a penny on javan gibbons as Beauval has good connection with Aspinall and Java.
"Hard" time for good reasons since few months. Will see if I could update like before as some are missing fresh french news And I do not forgot that I have some PM to answer to
Three excellent news. Only handful of Europeans zoos get 2 mio attendance. Moving of flamingos into an aviary removes pinioning and bird flu danger at the same time. And Javan gibbon EEP definitely needs more participants.
It seems that the Zoo wants to put all birds he can in aviary. In the same way, the pelicans pond will be netted in few months/years. At the end only ducks and cranes will stay in open enclosure.
That's a good initiative, more zoos should follow this up. I'd say the same for the cranes and ducks but we will see how that turns out.
With the pressure against pinioning I expect the EAZA to adopt this initiative as a policy even if some federal governments or the EU hadn’t prohibited pinioning.
Some photos updated from the new developpments : Works started at the south entrance for the future tunnels And the huge new aviary Future path between the aviary and the main path (neer the andean condor aviary) Future animal house (down the visitor path) Future monkey bridge and restaurant behind And aerial view from the cable car You can see that the main visitor path is up and meanders into the aviary. The same for the monkey bridges which are crossing the visitor path. Log into Facebook https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?vanity=Beauval.Didy&set=a.5727845623893166
Hello @Antoine. Is the monkey bridge going to be inside a netting or is it going to be a bridge with primate enclosures next to it similar to St. Louis’s Primate Canopy trail?
Monkey bridge and visitor path will be in the aviary like you saw on the pictures (buildings and part of the woods for example).
Due to a case of avian influenza reported in a farm near the Zooparc de Beauval, the bird show "Les Maîtres des Airs" is stopped until 4th October included. The direction indicates that no case is reported in the Zoo, and that all its birds are vaccinated.
@Haliaeetus Thanks for posting that. There were still boards up for the bird show at 3pm today, but I was planning on going tomorrow. I did see other signs at the arena, but I didn't take much notice of them.
