Other than the interior shots, Greenaway's A Zed & Two Noughts was shot almost entirely in Rotterdam Zoo. There are some long panning shots around a number of the enclosures, the old elephant paddock being a particular feature.

Note that the movie is strictly for mature audiences only (as are most of the still images you'll find on the Internet).

I shall have to watch this film; for the curiosity value as much as anything.

It doesn't have any entertainment value, other than the views of the old enclosures (if you ignore animals obviously stereotyping) and the nudity. The story, if you can call it that, is just bizarre.

Re-watched the wonderful Withnail and I last night. Please forgive a silly old Thespian for posting Richard E Grant's final soliloquy to the Regent's Park wolves:

-Parts of the TV series Primeval were filmed at London Zoo and Whipsnade, e.g. the 'Wellington Zoo' where Abby worked.

-The New Zealand film Love Birds, a romantic comedy starring Rhys Darby and a paradise shelduck, among others, is partially shot at Auckland Zoo. I haven't seen it yet as it doesn't get released until the 24th of February.

-The 2001 film The Zookeeper, starring Sam Neil and set in Eastern Europe, was set in a zoo. Pretty graphic movie as I remember, more a story of the break-up of Yugoslavia and subsequent wars (set in a fictional city I think) than being about the zoo itself. Had quite a lot of animals in it, including lions and a mandrill. I don't know if it was filmed in a real zoo or not. I think the zoo got bombed a bit though, so maybe not...

I really doubt this. I am very familiar with the WPZ Tropical building, and the "Bird on a Wire" zoo scene does not resemble it. It looks like a Hollywood set idea of a zoo, which is what it was.

Does anyone remember "Altered States" starring William Hurt, from the late 70s/early 80s? It had a long series of scenes filmed in the Bronx Zoo, although it was supposed to be the "Boston Zoo."

100% correct on Roar. In fact, the movie is the entire reason that Shambala exists. It was actually built just for the movie, before Tippi had any cats. They wanted to rent trained cats from other animal handlers, but they needed so many for their storyline that they would have had to mix cats from different handlers. All of the handlers refused to do this, so they ended up acquiring and breeding their own group. Once the movie was over, they kept all of their animals and started taking in other unwanted cats, so it morphed into the rescue center Shambala. Although I have been there twice, I have never seen the movie. I would love to get a copy of it on DVD somehow (it is out of print).

The 1982 film Cat People (which I saw the last half of on TV years ago) was filmed at the old and bad Audubon Park Zoo in New Orleans, before it underwent some major improvements.

I think Rocky had a scene in either Central Park Zoo or Bronx Zoo.

Slightly off topic, but if other forumsters would learn to use the bold type feature as I have above, it makes the posts much more readable IMO.

I just realized Rocky was set in Philadelphia, so it was probably Philadelphia Zoo, not New York City.

The 80's TV show Three's Company has scenes from the Los Angeles Zoo in the opening credits.
Also, the new movie coming out July 2011, The Zookeeper, was filmed at Franklin Park Zoo in Boston

The Philly zoo scene took place in Rocky 2...

Cat people (1982) only used a little part of the zoo; most of the background was mere coulisse.

The upcoming film "The Giant Mechanical Man" has scenes inside a penguin house, a polar bear underwater exhibit (filmed in Detroit!), and features a man with a job as a zookeeper. Here is a link to the trailer for the romantic comedy:

Don't forget the first installment of the "Seven Up" series, featuring a polar bear being teased at the Mappin Terraces.

Opening scene of 'Morgan, a Suitable Case for Treatment' was also in the old Monkey House at ZSL.

There are several television shows that use that LA Zoo as stand-ins for zoos in other places. There was a recent episode of "CSI" that was supposed to be at the fictional "Clark County Zoo" (Las Vegas is in Clark County, Nevada).

There was an episode of "The Sopranos" where Tony and his mistress go to an unspecified zoo, presumably in New Jersey. They go into a indoor tropical house that was at a zoo I don't know, but the exteriors were at the old LA Zoo gorilla exhibit (now replaced with the new one).

There was also an episode of "Malcolm in the Middle" where they go to their hometown zoo and it is the LA Zoo.
