Let's make a list of zoos that are open 365 days a year (yes, even on Christmas). Here are the few in America that I am aware of:

    Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum
    Busch Gardens Africa
    Disney Animal Kingdom
    Fort Worth Zoo
    San Antonio Zoo
    San Diego Zoo
    San Diego Zoo's Safari Park
    Wildlife World Zoo & Aquarium

Why are some zoos open on Christmas, anyway?
I suppose that whoever goes on Christmas day will have the entire zoo to themselves though.

Central Park and Prospect Park are both run by the same people that run Bronx Zoo. Is it open as well?

It might be helpful in future posts to spell out the name of the zoo. Since we are an international forum, not everyone is going to know that CMZ refers to Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs.

Thanks for posting, though - I mean no offense.

I went to the Arizona Sonora Desert Musuem on Christmas Day a few years ago and there was quite a good sized crowd. (I may go again this year).

Obviously some of the keepers have to be there anyway to take care of the animals, so I guess they figure if they can make money from admission sales, why not? Same reason movie theatres in America are open on Christmas Day.

When did you visit ASDM? Was it early right after it opened or later in the day?

I don't think any UK zoos open on Christmas Day.

    ^Edinburgh does.

Does San Francisco still open on the big day itself? I seem to remember the visitor killed by the tiger occurring on Christmas Day.

Taronga Zoo in Sydney is open on Christmas Day.

Twenty years ago Taronga used to get only about 100 people on Xmas Day (unless it was raining, in which case it was about 12).

During the Nineties word seemed to sread that the zoo was open on Christmas, and more and more people came each year. Nowadays, if it's sunny, I beleive it's around the 3000 mark.

On Christmas Day in Sydney virtually everything is closed, so tourists who are looking for something to do head over to Taronga, as do people who don't celebrate Christmas.

    :p

I thought he meant Cleveland Metropark Zoo?

Anyway, does anyone know if Melbourne or Adelaide Zoos are open on X-Mas day?

Taronga western plains zoo is also open Christmas day. The zoo has only ever closed for three days in it's history, once for the queen, once after a storm caused alot of damage and the third was for a massive police search for a suspected murderer.

I believe that at least all the major German zoos are open every day of the year. Opening hours might be somewhat limited at times, but the zoos are certainly open to visitors.

All eight major state-operated zoos in Australia are open 365 days a year.
