Starting the new year with some positive news... The Goeldi's Monkey have offspring. There's a new baby Okapi, though no further info at present.
Gorilla Effie has undergone surgery to remove a section of infected bowel. She is recovering well and is now back with the rest of the troop https://www.zsl.org/zsl-london-zoo/news/zsl-vets-save-critically-endangered-gorilla
Is there any news on the two lions from Indian have they arrived at London yet the last I saw was they where at Whipsnade off show
Keepers have started the annual stocktake (seen on social media). It was delayed from the fire in the Animal Adventure Café so was postponed by a month. Typical pictures of squirrel monkeys and penguins...
ZSL has the Jan 2018 inventory on their website. https://www.zsl.org/about-us/animal-inventory A few things I've noticed at London: Down to 1 Black Mamba, 1.5.6 Galapagos Tortoises - I know they recently received some extras but have they bred some? Down to 1.0 Sun Bittern, 3.0 White Pelicans, definitely had a Woolly-Necked Stork chick, No more Toco Toucans - I'm sure they used to have 2 breeding pairs, only 1 Black Hornbill and 1 Red Billed Toucan (no change) - they used to breed both regularly, not much change in the mammals!! They do seem to have more species of coral than mammals.
Another notable arrival revealed by the new inventory: 2,2,9 Round Island Skink (Leiolopisma telfairii) have entered the collection in the last year.
One interesting mammalian new arrival that hasn't been mentioned here yet is a male short-eared elephant-shrew. It's good to see another UK zoo going into keeping the species again. Now that the red-necked wallabies have left the zoo, I imagine the Mappin Terraces must be looking very bare - there are now just two male red kangaroos and the four emus remaining.
Think it was mentioned a few times last year it was certainly present by October 2017, as an offshow exhibit was visible from afar in the Clore.
Sadly, there is now only 1 kangaroo left along with the emus. Something has to be done, you can't call an area Australian Outback with such a small collection. I would think that the kangaroo will be moved and the whole area will have a revamp
Looking at the latest inventory, neither species is at London. The only Australian waterfowl at the moment is a lone female plumed whistling duck.
