Continuing with this digression from London Zoo:-

I agree that Whipsnade's polar bear exhibit was very small, and uninspiring, but I think the Kodiak bear exhibit was worse both for the bears and the visitors.

The pit was deep so the Kodiak bears could only be viewed from above and bears couldn't see outside the confines of their pit.

The new Sumatran Tiger male ‘Asim’ is at London Zoo and exploring the rear paddock with the pool, separated from Melati for a while.

Went to have a look at him today, not as impressive a tiger physically as Jae Jae. He was pacing the dividing barrier between the two pens and scent-marking as he did so, which is a good sign, I would say. Melati didn't look that interested... :)

Additionally, I wonder if anyone here has ever seen the caecilians in the separate room to the side of the aquarium?

I’ve had enough luck to see the two lined caecellian, surfacing!

    Just a quick question...

A number of sources have mentioned Jae Jae and Melati as having produced seven cubs. I’m aware of:

    Unnamed (U) born Sep 2013

    Budi (M) born Feb 2014
    Nakal (M) born Feb 2014
    Cinta (F) born Feb 2014

    Karis (F) born Jun 2016
    Achilles (M) born Jun 2016

Was there a seventh cub I’m not aware of?

I believe some media sources such as the BBC news website when first reporting the tragedy included some background and links to previous stories of Melati , in doing so they seem to have simply miscalculated the total number of cubs in the story they published.

If I remember rightly, there were 2 cubs in the first litter one of which drowned in the pool,
    could be wrong though

No, we merely moved the discussion into a distinct thread:

ZSL London Zoo - Sumatran tiger Melati killed by Asim
