Does anyone know why the African hunting dogs were off limits and their viewing window boarded up today?
According to Facebook , one of the females Brandi was in a fight with the others last night and was sadly euthanised this morning due to the extent of her injuries. They just said the pack is all female and just reaching adulthood at four years old. And so these fights are all about asserting dominance and finding their place in the pack.
It'll be sad to see Emmett go when he leaves for Blackpool Zoo as part of the European Breeding Programme but exciting news about the new bull elephant coming
It be interesting how the elephant herd react, as they are so use to Emmett, so hopefully this new bull will help produce new elephant calves ! As it will be 2022 at the earliest! Unless Karishma is already pregnant
Confirmed today that Asian Elephant bull, Sam (aged 5) is moving to Antwerp shortly to replace Ming Jung. Both moves (Ming Jung arriving and Sam departing) and are likely to take place next week.
Happy sam is finally leaving whipsnade and starting afresh as he hasn’t been integrated in the herd for a while now! How many other elephants are in Antwerp to keep him company?
His friend will be seven-year-old Assam. This move is really good because Sam will prepare for the future role of the breeding bull.
Why was Sam kept seperately? Was he disruptive? He is still very young to be leaving his mother and natal group surely, but that is how they seem to do it nowadays. In the wild he would stay with his natal group far longer than this.
His mother died Azzizah over a year ago now, and his mother best friend Mya adopted him but she wasn’t well established in the heard because of her own arguments with the Matriarch Kaylee. So when Mya left for Italy to bring harmony to the elephants, Sam hasn’t had anyone look after him as such, apart from his dad, so I think it’s best he moves away and starts afresh,
Yes, in that case Sam doesn't really have a natal group now. Moving him seems more reasonable from your explanation.
For those who wants to know how Emmett is doing. Yesterday I checked on him on Facebook to see how he's getting on and he's doing very good at Blackpool although he will be off show for now until he got used to his new house, environment and smells after arriving from Whipsnade
Sam is now in his new home In Zoo Antwerp look on the Facebook page and it shows him interacting with the other male elephant! , I wonder if Ming Jung has arrived at whipsnade yet, and they just haven’t released it yet?
[Mod Note: This and subsequent posts relating to Indian Rhino breeding moved from the London Zoo 2019 thread] whats the point if a new male rhino when whipsnades cows are past breeding? behan will have her final calf soon, beluki has nit cycled for years. new females would be more important. not really a good area for asian rhinos anyway.
