Much like in the Hippo house where the drains flow upwards!

Never was the saying “the worst animal in a zoo is an architect” more appropriate to ZSL! I’d love to know how they choose their architects/designers...Pin the Tail on the Donkey Id imagine.

    whoever is cheapest

the elephant area was designed for elephamts which wete exercised well bywalking through the grounds. what you have now is a mud pit for a paddock, or a small sand yard. not really what the worlds most intelligent quadruped needs.....

I've seen picture on Facebook of a baby Indian Rhino at Whipsnade. Apparently she's about a week old :)

The elephant exhibit at Whipsnade is the best in the country, every time I go you get such good views and the elephants are treated so well.

The one thing it is missing is a swimming pool! If you go woeburn you will see how much their elephants love to swim and can submerge themselves fully in the water especially in the heat!

Indian rhino Behan had her calf on 8th December. Its a female which is nice as it may well be the last born there for some time. There is video of it on various FB pages including Whipsnade's.

Driving past the Zoo I noticed new poles and posts have been placed in and around the penguin pool. Maybe netting it over to stop the seagulls?

Visited Whipsnade today for the first time in some years. Saw the Black-throated Thrush feeding in a tree. Easy to find, it was in front of about fifty birders. Great bird, not at all bothered by its public.
Loved the aquarium, great displays, good conservation message.
Managed to miss the Gaur and Sloth Bear(s?), wondering if they still have the latter?

There was still a Sloth bear 2 weeks ago, but the Gaur were confined to the hardstanding

I just didn't look hard enough then! Really enjoyed Whipsnade and will go back in the spring when they have the bird show up and flying.

    Yes it does.

On a side note, I'm sorry we don't agree on anything but I'm not finding this particularly healthy so can we just leave this thread for news as it's supposed to be? Thanks.

Why don't you just say what you think it is they need and are not getting?

To say all they have is a mud pit and small sand yard is just not true. You don't have to like the facilities if that is your opinion - but at least give it a fair appraisal.

Yup... and 7 grass paddocks I believe. Alongside the new £2m indoor accomodation that opened in 2017.
