Does anyone know when the new Australian complex will be finished? I want travel to Switzerland in may.
The current opening is set for Spring 2018, so May is potentially a bit tricky before any further announcements....
I last visited mid-October and all outdoor enclosures looked almost finished, with only signage and other final touches missing, how it looks inside I don't know, but Zoo Zurich does not miss it's deadlines normally
No, the complex will open on 29 March, the outdoor exhibits look like they are already finished, but saddly I haven't seen the house yet, at least the Perenties are waiting behind the scenes.
The zoo received 1.21 million visitors in 2017, attached is a mini review of the year. Ein elefantöses Zoojahr
Zurich will receive 2 Koalas from the Australian Reptile Park for their new Australia house, which opens March 29th. Umgang mit Koalas lernen

So will there be cart safari tours in the main savannah? Or are they just there for decoration? I really hope its the former. Also, what's Masoala Express?
Masoala express is a small train that drives from the zoo entrance to the Masoala hall. Graupapagei = Grey parrot Hyaene = Hyena Erdmanchen = Slender-tailed meerkat Stachelschwein = Porcupine Dahomey rind = Dahomey cattle Strauss = Ostrich The other speak for themselves. The Grey parrots get a walkthrough aviary and the rhino and giraffe can be viewed indoors in the Giraffenhaus There will also be a bar and an African village. So there will be a standard big African savanna enclosure with the usual Grevy zebra, Reticulated giraffe and White rhino, with additional Ostrich and Antelope (Springbok and Scimitar-horned oryx were mentioned) with scattered around some other enclosures, with the ones for Hyena and porcupine in a Kopje setting.
Afaik: no, the double-decker tour-bus will serve as an up-close viewing window ("Der Feldweg führt an einem im Schlamm festgefahrenen Bus vorbei, der eine attraktive Einsicht in die Savanne bietet." from the zoo website). ... The education and theming will focus on the topic of sustainable tourism. The Lewa village will entail a 'tourism school' and the zebra-striped motor plane is an hommage to Bernhard Grzimek.
Thanks. My initial thought was actually "little man" (based on the similarity to mannikin and Munchkin), but that's not what Google Translate came up with.
And kopje felsen just means rock formation? The Dahomey cattle thing was confusing me, and to be honest I'm still confused. Isn't Plains Zebra the more common species for mixed exhibits, on account of the aggression of Grevys? Or are Zurich going to replace the Chapmans they currently hold? If so any suggestion of what might go in that central yard?
'Kopje' is originally Afrikaans and denotes the typical granite formations in southern Africa. 'Felsen' is German for 'rock', 'cliff'. The various hoofstock enclosures at the center of the old zoo site will be developed into an 'asian steppe' as the last planned step of the masterplan 2030.
I found this link Masterplan Obviously very excited for the Asian steppe and the coastal aviary. But it mentions a Gorilla and Orangutan House rather than the African Forest complex that was discussed on my thread last summer?
