      The 'shelf' halfway back was the forward extent of the old indoor cages. The service and access doors to outside are still the original ones from inception of the building. The boulders must have been used to infill/ build up the old public viewing area to make the levels similar- that would be necessary as the original raised cage areas were about 4ft higher than the public area ground level.
