I design zoos in my spare time and I try to make them as realistic as possible, but I also include a lot of mixed exhibits so would these work. I know their have been similar threads but not with these mixes. Also I hope this is the right section for it! Camels and pheasants? Sea lions and Pelicans (I have heard of that they can predate seabirds)? Bonobos and monkeys (I know chimps would kill them)? Birds and Fruitbats? Indian Rhinos, Blackbuck, Wild horses and Bactrian Camels? Macaques and Elephants? Giraffes, Zebra and Black Rhino (I know whites would work)? Condors, Storks, Geese, Coati and Spectacled Bear? Any feedback is appreciated.
1: how to prevent the pheasants from escaping or being eaten by predators? 2: Too much stress for the pelicans 3: I think that has been done before (Columbus Zoo?) 4: depends on the fruitbats and the birds. Several flying fox species (Pteropus sp., Eidolon helvum, Rousettus aegyptiacus etc.) have been and are kept in tropical rainforest houses in various zoos. 5: Indian Rhinos & blackbucks: yes, for example Vienna Zoo. P-Horses & Bactrian camels: Salzburg, Rostock (among others) 6: Not macaques, but Beekse Bergen mixes African elephants with hamadyras baboons 7: Giraffes & Zebras: several institutions 8: Condors, storks & anserids: Zoo Berlin; Coatis & Spectacled bear: Zürich. If you want your birds to stay alive, don't put them together with nosy, bity carnivores...
Correct me if I'm wrong wrong but don't (did?) Singapore keep their sea lions and pelicans together with penguins and formerly manatees as well? Port Lympne sometimes mix black rhino with a wide variety of hoofstock on their African Truck Ride.
What an odd coincidence, I was just about to make a topic on a similar subject. Can any pinnipeds be trusted with penguins or other waterbirds? Or is there always going to be a seriously risk of them eating them/playing with them to death? Edit, sealions and pelicans are kept together at Longleat, but they both live in a very big lake, so I expect the pelicans can easily get away from the sealions if they are hassling them.
Ree Park, Denmark does keep Black rhino together with giraffes, zebra, ostrich and lot of antelope species in a 10 acre large savannah enclosure.
Sea Lions and Penguins would be a no. The penguins would quickly find themselves predated. However, I believe Pelicans can be done, and I think there might even be a zoo or two in the states that does it.
The new exhibits at the Smithsonian National Zoo and Fresno Chaffee Zoo incorporated Brown Pelicans with California Sea Lions.
A lot of zoos won't house zebras with other animals because zebra can get aggressive. Yes, they both live in the same area but consider the facilities who have large mixed exhibits such as both San Diego zoo and the Safari Park plus the Phoenix Zoo. All 3 have large mixed exhibits but they also all keep zebra separate. Even Out of Africa in Camp Verde, AZ keep their zebra separate and they have been known to house mountain lions with black bears.
before the manatees moved to the River Safari they shared their (freshwater) tank with pelicans and African penguins. The latter also had an area accessible only to themselves if they so desired. The sealions were mostly in off-show saltwater pools behind - I think they only came out during shows times.
Pelicans are pretty large, so I imagine risk of being eaten by a sea lion is fairly low. (though it could still happen)
Yep I saw this exhibit that had a male Meerkat and a male Warthog living together. Very progressive, they raise an abandoned lion cub together.
