Ok a chance to comment on one of my pet peeves (as a cat guy). I have seen other zoos that also call them "african black leopards." Black leopards are common in parts of Asia and very rare in Africa. It is virtually certain that all black leopards in captivity are of Asian descent. Why would zoos label them African? Why not just call them black leopards?

It quite hard to find a normal phase captive leopard in South Africa. As color morphs are generally frowned upon in the Zoo community, all the WAZA facilities in ZA (only 2 of which actually have african leopards) have the normal phase while the several small, private zoos have only the black morph.
I personally like seeing the Normal phase more, they're just so striking! :D;)
