American Wood Bison (Bison bison athabascae) at Tierpark Hellabrunn - April

Larger than the more well-known Plains Bison, this taxon is the largest extant terrestrial mammal in North America. Much like the Plains Bison, this subspecies was brought to the brink of extinction in the 19th century, being thought extinct or nearly so by the 1900's. However, the discovery of a surviving wild population and captive breeding efforts have increased the numbers of this taxon considerably.
