Black Rhino viewing windows at Koeln 12/05/09

Interesting photo. It is surely quite rare to see any kind of rhino species through glass...

I am astounded. Imagine being so close without looking down into a pit.

This has to be a first! A rhino behind perspex. It actually does not look all that thick.Like aquarium perspex can be.

is it just me, or this an accident waiting to happen

I am not sure whether it was the same enclosure as the one in this photograph but, on a visit to Cologne some years ago, I saw an Indian rhinoceros kept behind glass.....

I assume it has been tested by the rhinos, but what kind of glass or plexi could withstand one?????

There are several scratches on the inside of the glass that must have come from the rhinos' horns. I don't think they charge at it though...

The zoo will end the keeping of rhinos in the next time.

Very good decision, the enclosures (outside and inside) are absolutely unsuitable for rhinos....
