This large aviary is more than 30 feet high and 100 feet long and is home to 4 male California Condors. The $2.3 million project opened in 2014 and while there are two glass viewing sections perhaps the highlight is the fact that the design of the mesh is very impressive. While strolling along the side of the aviary it is difficult, at particular angles, to ascertain where the barrier is and even in this photo the mesh netting in the foreground is very hard to see. It creates an immersive effect that is then offset by the clunky-looking cement "bunkers" for the viewing shelters and indoor quarters for the birds.

Oregon Zoo has an off-site, 52-acre facility called the Jonsson Center that can hold more than 50 condors and the zoo has done some great conservational work with the species. It is one of the very few establishments in the world that has California Condors and I've now visited 5 out of the 6 zoos with the species on public display. Are there any more zoos to add to the list?

      1. San Diego Zoo Safari Park
      2. San Diego Zoo
      3. Santa Barbara Zoo
      4. Chapultepec Zoo (Mexico City)
      5. Oregon Zoo
      6. The Peregrine Fund's World Center for Birds of Prey

I'm guessing that you didn't visit Chapultepec Zoo. Am I correct?

Yes, that is correct. I've been to almost 300 zoos just in the USA and while I've visited Mexico on several occasions I've never been to any of that nation's zoological facilities. Maybe I should plan a road trip there! :)

You should! I really recommend Xcaret, I've been there and will never forget. A great variety of species including Baird's Tapir and Resplendent Quetzal! Xelha is good as well, with manatees and a large brackish water lake that you can snorkel in!
