More and more aquariums these days, ranging in size from small facilities to major aquatic centers, have begun to showcase fish in cylindrical tanks that can be viewed from all sides and angles. Rather than the box-like rectangles set in the wall, these modern exhibits are great for the general public and allow for tanks to be placed in the middle of pathways rather than be strictly confined to the sides of walls. However, is there an issue with the privacy of the animals? About half of the time there would be no intrusions, but do certain aquatic species get stressed being in cylindrical tanks during opening hours of aquariums?

some problems with cylindrical tanks: they have far less swimming space than traditional tanks so are only suitable for certain species; they have a very small surface area in relation to water volume; temperature control can be more problematical in either direction (they are more difficult than traditional tanks to cool in warm places and more difficult to heat in cold places); many species get stressed from having no retreat (i.e. in a traditional wall tank they can retreat to the rear of the tank; in a cylindrical tank there is no such option for the residents).

Very large cylindrical tanks don't suffer the same problems as narrow cylindrical tanks like these ones.
