      Description of Hald Ege Miniregnskov:

Alright, this is a first time – I’m posting pictures from a place that I, for once, think I may be the only Zoochatter who have visited, given that it’s a small local place that doesn’t really advertise itself.

      A rundown:
Hald Ege Miniregnskov (“Hald Ege Mini Rainforest”) is a tiny tropical zoo located in the village of Hald Ege close to the larger town of Viborg, Denmark. It’s owned by an organization named Trepas which provides work for mentally handicapped people, and as such the majority of employees at Hald Ege Miniregnskov – with the exception of the manager and a few supervisors – have various mental disorders. It opened in 2003 when Trepas wanted to extend their range of workplaces.

Though Hald Ege Miniregnskov, as mentioned, effectively functions as a tropical zoo, they don’t actually have a zoo license, and as such can only keep species that can be kept in private hands. Due to a limited budget and resources (no trained zookeepers work there), almost all of their species are bog-standard pet-shop species.

Hald Ege Miniregnskov is made up of two original greenhouses, one new greenhouse and a small outdoor area and consists of the following parts:

      - The entrance area, located in the first of the original greenhouses. Other than a ticket shop, a souvenir shop, and a small café, there are two mixed aviaries with parrots.

      - The actual greenhouse area, which is the original highlight of the exhibition. A medium-sized greenhouse with free-ranging common marmosets, zebra finches, and Chinese painted quails. There are also ponds for fish and turtles as well as an aviary for toucans.

      - The desert area, located in the second of the original greenhouses. Most of the desert area consists of a cactus garden, but in recent years Hald Ege Miniregnskov has also built a row of aviaries for parrots as well as a few reptile exhibits. They regularly expand this part with new aviaries.

      - A plant shop, located in the second of the original greenhouses. Other than plant sale, there are also a few parrot aviaries here.

      - “Den Nye Regnskov” (“The New Rainforest”), which is a 500 m2 big greenhouse, opened in 2016 and built more like a classical zoo tropical house with mock rock, a viewpoint, height differences, more interesting architecture, and lots of free-flying birds. The free-ranging species are Gouldian finch, red-crested turaco, red bishop, diamond dove, and Chinese painted quails.

      - The outdoor area with a small farm with goats, rabbits, and chickens, as well as a flower garden.
