Main Bird Cage Side

The Catalina Island Bird opened in 1929. It was 8 miles long when it opened as the largest Bird Park in the world. It had hundreds of rare species including Cassowary, King Vulture, Humboldt Penguin, and Saurus Cranes. When it closed in 1966 most of the birds went to the new Los Angeles Zoo.

Thanks for posting the photos. I had no idea that there were remains of the old bird zoo left, nor its history of sending the birds to the LA Zoo when it closed.

@DavidBrown well most of the old 500 cages that stretched through the valley were destroyed in WWII and then again when it closed so its really just this cage, the entrance, and a few buildings. LA zoos records show that 578 birds were taken in. The large bird cages that were built on the hill by the entrance most likely held most of the species from the bird park.
