New orangutan exhibit.

Opens in one month. This half, the arboreal side, looks finished. The other half, the land side (outside of this picture), looks nowhere near done. I hope that half is better, because these fake climbing structures do nothing for me (although it is a vast improvement over what was before). If this is Phoenix's idea of building a World Class Zoo (as the campaign for these new exhibits state), they have no idea what a world class zoo really looks like.

New orangutan exhibit.

I've seen 56 of America's 60 best zoos, and all in the past 5 years, and yet there is not really a single outstanding orangutan exhibit. I've stated on ZooChat in the past that perhaps the #1 enclosure is in Seattle at Woodland Park Zoo but after that there are slim pickings. The "O-Line" at the National Zoo is fantastic, but the rest of the enclosure is weak. There are many so-so exhibits, several all-indoor ones that are disappointing (Cleveland, Brookfield, Fort Wayne) and the ugliest outdoor one of all must be Kansas City.

These are very approximate rankings and what I would call the top 5:

      #1: Woodland Park
#2: Omaha (65 foot structures and lots of netting in 2 exhibits)
      #3: Sedgwick County
      #4: Saint Louis
#5: Atlanta (probably still the most apes of any zoo in America)

Practically anything would be an improvement over the old Phoenix exhibit. About as hideous as any I've ever seen.

After having seen video of this new exhibit, this photo shows approximately 1/3 of one of the two outdoor yards.
