How hard are (any) kiwis to see in the wild?
    • ThylacineAlive
@birdsandbats I'm pretty sure Greater Spotted are the only ones that are nearly impossible to see as long as you visit the right areas. I know you can take tours to see Okarito, and Little Spotted and Southern Brown are very common on a couple of the popular off-shore islands.

@birdsandbats @ThylacineAlive 4 of the 5 kiwi species are pretty much guaranteed when you do a tour in the right area. Greater spotted are a nightmare to find (just ask Chlidonias ) and there are no tours and the one area where we stood a chance was closed due to extremely bad weather. We did not do any tours and still found 3 species and heard the 4th. Kiwi are not extremely difficult to find by yourself given you are in the right area, very patient, quiet and use a red torch. That said most New Zealanders have never seen a Kiwi in the wild...
