      The other photo shows a row of these cages, the bears have access to around 4-5 of these, as well as an outdoor exhibit which whilst looking old, is still quite spacious.

      Also I hear these bears are destined to move to another collection before too long.

      Fortunately for me I didn't realise there was indoor viewing...
      I thought that the outdoor parts were undersized but at least contained quite a lot of logs and other furnishing. I am glad I didn't see the inside. Looks totally spartan.

      I love Berlin Tierpark but this must be the worst exhibit there.

      However, I cannot be the only ZooChat member who recalls when this building housed gorillas, orang-utans and chimpanzees, kept permanently indoors, as there were no outdoor cages then.

      That really was bad.......

      Yes, with the outdoor areas they are ok-ish. Though two bears seemed to be locked inside with one of the bears only having access to one of these little sections.
      I also assumed they are locked in here for the night (though I could be wrong of course).
      And in winter are they confined solely to the indoor area?

      That would be an expression of my amusement at the aforementioned point re: the ABH being lambasted much more than this enclosure ever is, rather than finding this enclosure amusing.

      Interesting; when I visited the enclosures held Himalayan Striped Squirrels and Mongolian Jirds, and the Short-eared Elephant Shrews were in the Elephant House.

      When I visited in April 2014, the bears were locked inside the house, and each had access to only a single section each.

      Before I had seen the comments under this photo, I posted a near identical response to a different picture of the sun bear house (http://www.zoochat.com/141/very-poor-sun-bear-enclosures-417004/): the "I love the Tierpark, but even so...." thought, and the historical snippet as well. Should I be worried if my thoughts go in exactly the same direction as Tim May's?

      There were Short-eared Elephant Shrews in the Elephant House as well as in here and I didn't see any Mongolian Jirds. Though that's not to say they weren't in some other part of the Tierpark that I didn't see of course.


      In that case I would guess they are confined indoors for as much as 5 to 6 months, and at night as well!? Definitely not 'ok-ish' then...

      It seems that they are also rotated between the enclosures, as every outdoor enclosure (which I still find too small...) had 1 bear in it and 2 bears had to stay indoors...

      I am very happy this will be one of the first enclosures that will be demolished....

      The outdoor cages are not really better, altough they are build in 1996-so until that time, the sunbears were kept only indoors, too....but's what's wrong with that ? Leipzig is keeping tapirs and pygmy hippos just indoors, Wroclaw Hippos, and nobody critise that...

      The largest problem at the Tierpark is first the husbandry of the animals, then the exhibts themselfs.
