Wow, a number of white rhinos! Are they mixed herd from males and females, or these are just females with their calves, vogelcommando?
Plus ..., I believe they had for a some time a second - competitor - bull in separate and adjacent housing. At this very moment, they just maintain one breeding bull with the herd and with one actual breeding female and 2 female calves from 2014 and 2015 (the ones probably in this very photo). BTW: All other adult females are basically "lost" as being of old SBB stock and all interrelated. The chances that any of those will now breed is remote at best. In hindsight, they should have broken them up years ago as family ties do not work well with related females and affect their cyclicity to the point only the mother may breed, but not her female offspring. They tried removing and transfering one a few years back, but she did not settle well in the new location (Muenster ..., far from ideal rhino setting for a female rhino used to wide open spaces ..., she returned within months). They also tried some AI on another very much older female and have since stopped that ...., I believe! As studbookholder though they serve as good masters and have taken in poorly breeding females and made them into very succesful multiple breeding females and then off-loading them to collections not breeding their rhinos (it helps to have an experienced breeding female on site ... for obvious reasons). Same goes for non-breeding males or males with good genes and no access to reproductively active females.
