This zoo always appears to be a gigantic rock quarry, as many of the hoofstock and carnivore enclosures are stone grottoes that in reality should have been demolished or extensively renovated a decade or two ago.
This exhibit has stood since 1929. Back then it was probably one of the best on the planet for bears.
I own maybe 175 zoo and animal books, and looking through the photos it occurs to me that it is amazing but true that in 1929 this bear grotto probably was one of the best exhibits on the planet. Now why the hell has the zoo not replaced it?
