The Tiger Pit @ Whipsnade, circa 1930s

This is from a postcard. The Tiger Pit was adapted in 1947 for a pair of Kodiak Bears, who lived in it until 1984, when they were sent to Duisberg. It was very barren, just the concrete tiers, a pool, and a tree trunk. The pit was filled in and grassed over around 1989.

Are there any informations concerning the tiger subspecies/hybrid status?

      It's duisburg ;)

For me they look like sumatrans.

I don't know much about the tigers back then. I think they were Bengals, but whether they were pure or hybrid, I'm afraid I can't help you with.

      Sorry Animal ;)

      Thanks!
      Ah, Duisburg!
Yes, i was aslo thinking of Sumatrans first but because of the date and the fact that in these days e.g. Berlin had "Sunda Tigers", i am interested to lern more about these ones in their concrete desert.

I remember seeing four baby Kodiaks (rather smaller than the ones on the video) on my first visit to Whipsnade in 1972. They were charming, but the enclosure was very bare and outdated even then.
