    Hello again!

Made a return trip on May 25th and here's what I found (there were some species I incorrectly thought left the zoo that were just off exhibit and other species that have returned). After talking to a keeper, I learned that the area of the zoo that I called "Aviary Row" that is across from their Great Ape Passage is being rebuilt into two large aviaries. [✓] means I saw this species, [X] means didn't see during this visit, and BOLD means new since my last visit. (*) means I have input from the keeper about this species. RED means off-exhibit. (?) means "no idea where the species is". Here's my update list:

    African Savanna
    • [✓] Common ostrich (Struthio camelus ssp.)

    • [X] Waldrapp (Northern bald) ibis (Geronticus eremita) (*)

    COMING SOON!
    • Andean condor (Vultur gryphus)

For the species I put (*):
    • The pair of hamerkops that used to be in the African Aviary were not recommended to be paired under the Species Survival Program (SSP) so they were transferred out. Currently, the hamerkop in there is a female (0.1).
    • I was told by a keeper that blue-throated macaws will be a new species in the South American Rainforest Aviary and that they were currently off exhibit, though I did hear them when I was going through the aviary. Their red-fronted macaw was not in the separate enclosure that it shares with the Temminck's tragopan male, the curl-crested araçari, and the Linnaeus's two-toed sloth.
    • They are working with their guira cuckoo; the cuckoo got really bonded with the curl-crested araçari and was acting aggressive around the keepers, hence why I didn't see them when I originally posted this list.
    • There is talk that their spectacled owl will be in the flight on the right-side on the path where the guanaco and the black-necked swans are located at the Puente al Sur.
    • I didn't see their white-faced whistling-ducks or their scarlet ibises during this visit. They are no longer listed in their South American Rainforest Aviary. There were white ibises in both the Puente al Sur aviary and the South American Rainforest Aviary. Presently, only two white ibises inhabit the South American Rainforest Aviary.
    • Per a conversation I had with a keeper at Happy Hallow Park and Zoo, the waldrapp ibises that were in the Puente al Sur Aviary are now there. Per a conversation I had with a keeper at Micke Grove Zoo, they will be transferring some of their waldrapp ibises to San Francisco Zoo; while they were not present at the time of my visit, I know they will make their way back to San Francisco.
    • Their African sacred ibises bred in their African Aviary a couple of months ago. There is a juvenile in both the African Aviary and in the aviary at Puente al Sur.

Lastly, from the conversation I had with the keeper, their Grant's guan (though someone will try and correct me and state she was a Spix's guan; when looking at the different subspecies of Spix's guan, it's the Grant's subspecies that is black with white speckling), Guanita, passed away almost a year ago due to old age :( She was the only one of her kind left in North America. I will treasure the few pictures that I have of her. May she Rest In Peace.

Forgot to post about their resident American barn owl in the original post. Doh!

San Francisco Zoo is working on bringing in more birds in the future. I'm looking forward to my next visit in a couple of months.
