Akron is mentioned in the article as well as Cleveland. Webb’s World: Cleveland Zoo’s new exhibit takes you to the Asian Highlands
I asked about Pride of Africa today. The Akron Zoo responded by saying: “We are still working on final details. We will share more info once we have everything finalized!” An official announcement may be made in the near future.
It is about time. Hopefully this week or the second week of July. I cannot see them announcing it the week of the 4th. Especially with the 4th in the middle of the week. I could be wrong though. I have figured out Wild Asia will be larger than I first thought. It may even cause the zoo to move northward. This announcement is likely to be different from others since they will announce both exhibits at once. Pride of Africa should be around 3.6 acres. Wild Asia should be around 2.65 acres. I figured out the soon to be former Tiger Valley is likely around 1.5 acres.
Any reasoning behind your stated acreages for both new developments? I assume national holiday of the 4th July is out of the question (for announcements).
The acreage is actually something I know. I am just highlighting that these will be larger exhibits for Akron. They will also most likely announce both exhibits at the same time. This will expand the zoo more than Grizzly Ridge did. I think that the new tiger exhibit could be on new land. This means the existing lion, tiger, and bear exhibits could be renovated for other species. I cannot see it fitting where these exhibits are located. This acreage also means that there has to be more than three species in each area. The question is which species. I think we are about to get all of our answers and hopefully a surprise or two.
Curious Creatures changes appear to be finally getting completed. More Partula snails are on exhibit now. There is not an octopus on exhibit because I think the zoo is in the process of getting a new one. The red eyed tree frogs have moved to the former mantella exhibit in Legends of the Wild. Giant prickly stick insects have moved into the frogs former exhibit. The flamboyant flower beetles are also now on exhibit.
I have made a species list for Akron. It is not complete because some of the multi-species exhibits do not label all of the inhabitants. I will make changes when I information becomes available. Akron Zoo - Akron Zoo Species List 7/2/2018
The zoo has not been using their parking booths this year. Non-member guests pay the parking fee when they purchase for their tickets at the zoo's ticket counter.
The zoo has added signs to the construction fence. These signs are construction vehicle identification signs. Now that the holiday is almost over, it is time to finally make an announcement. This wait has been too long.
The zoo appears to be better labeling buildings than they did before. Komodo Kingdom Education Center and the Komodo Kingdom Café received new signage earlier this year. Grasslands Café now has an additional sign on top with Café on it along with the original Grassland Café signs.
67 year old female Galapagos tortoise Boxie has joined 29 year old female Pagos on exhibit. Boxie is now the zoo’s oldest resident.
I just looked Grizzly Ridge was announced in July 2011. It opened in July 2013. The last I heard, Pride of Africa is to open Memorial Day weekend. No announcement yet. No counting the zoo’s rotating aquarium exhibit, this announcement is cutting it close. Legends of the Wild, Komodo Kingdom, Wild Prairie, and Lehner Family Zoo Gardens were all announced multiple years in advanced. At this rate, it could be announced at the same time as Cleveland’s cheetah exhibit.
Next Friday (July 20th) is the 5th anniversary of the opening of Mike and Mary Stark Grizzly Ridge. Could the announcement be planned around this anniversary since it was the last major expansion? Time will tell.
Akron Zoo on Instagram: “We're excited to announce the birth of a Siberian musk deer fawn! The female fawn was born on June 13 to parents, Anastasia and Vlad. The…”
Glad to see the zoo having success with their new species. The musk deer ssp is small, but hopefully it can expand to more Northern zoos.
