Interesting movie for Almaty zoo in English .They are successfully breeding Saiga and have a group of at least 7 animals. ZTL seems bit outdated, but this is normal for so remote collection. They have for example Tayra, which is not listed in ZTL.

An interesting (and non-zoo related) aside, Almaty isn't the capital of Kazakhstan...:p;)

Yes, it is reasantly re-named city Nursultan (from Astana) on the former president Nazarbayev :)

There was a quiz doing the rounds on Facebook the other week, the amount of ZooChatters who didn't know that was quite astounding... And yes, I was one of those that didn't have a clue! :p

The founders of the saiga population at Almaty Zoo came from the breeding centre in Uralsk, Western Kazakhstan. They breed well in zoos, it is keeping them alive and well for a long time that's a problem. Despite being a 'difficult species', they can and will survive in small enclosures even for a decade (which is long for them), but there's little point in keeping an open grassland species built for sprinting and migration in a tiny paddock.

No link with the zoos but since September 2022 the city of Nursultan has been renamed back to Astana...
