Bronx Zoo (It's hard to go into this list without passively aggressively alluding to my immense frustration that my favorite zoo has not opened a major new exhibit for quite a while and seems to at least visibly have none in the works)
    - Nile Hippopotamus
    - Gray Wolf
    - Pygmy Hippopotamus
    - Guanaco
    - Cheetah
    - Yak
    - Bactrian Camel
    - African Elephant (Keeping my fingers crossed Bronx while suck it up and build a new elephant exhibit although I hope they do so for Asians.)
    - Sumatran Rhinoceros
    - Black Rhinoceros
    - Emu
    - Blesbok
    - Wildebeest
    - Oryx
    - World of Darkness animals

Bronx still keeps Domestic Bactrian Camel and Emu, and many of the species once kept in World of Darkness were either moved elsewhere in the zoo or have been added back on-show over time (ex. Mohol Bushbabies).

And if we're dreaming about what we want back at the zoo, Proboscis Monkey, Platypus, African Forest Elephant, and Thylacine certainly top my list:p

The brucellosis outbreak fifteen years ago thinned Bison numbers significantly. As well as genetic pollution that most Bison are actually a significant part Cattle. The emergence of the the Bison meat industry also may have something to do with it.

I haven't posted here in a long time.

    Detroit Zoo:

    -Scimitar-horned oryx
    -Mandrill
-Any macaw (They had Scarlet, then Green-winged, now they're gone)
    -Sichuan takin
    -Brazilian tapir
-Common hippopotamus (The last one died of old age)
-Asian elephant (Though they phased them out for welfare reasons)
    -Harp seal
    -Scottish highland cattle
    -Goitered gazelle
-Lesser kudu (I have not seen them at least on-exhibit the past few visits)
    -Ostrich
    -Hummingbirds
    -Klipspringer
    -Diana monkey
    -African wild dog
-Their entire saltwater aquarium that they had upstairs in the Wildlife Interpretive Gallery awhile back

Can anyone verify if Detroit had any Aldabra or Galapagos tortoises? I vaguely remember seeing some sort of giant tortoise when I was like 3 or 4 around 2003-04.

That's a very interesting list; the bongo entry for New York immediately caught my attention.

Bronx Zoo obtained a bongo "Doreen" in 1932; this was, I believe, the first bongo ever exhibited in any zoo. She died in 1951 so it would appear that she was the only bongo ever in New York.

    Great list.

    A few mistakes I found

Brookfield held walrus until 2003, also there last lowland tapir passed away this year.

Lincoln Park lost there Pallas cat this year

The moose have already left Milwaukee, and the brown bear will rotate with the black bears.

Bronx has kept both species of African elephant more than once throughout its history, I'd be interested to know the year each of those species left the collection.

To the best of my knowledge the last forest elephant in New York was the female “Doruma” (sometimes called “Pinky") who died on 1st March 1970.

There is some discussion on the Bronx Zoo's forest elephants here:-

Dallas Zoo has bongos (in fact, they are breeding). They were off exhibit for a bit because they can't be seen unless you ride the monorail, which was down for a while.

I'm not sure how you'd count this, but Dallas still has a tapir (Baird's I believe). She's extremely old and in "retirement" behind the scenes.
