The Zoos SA mag isn't great anymore either, all there is is ads, fundraisers, kids section, keeper meet, talk on the pandas and talk on chimpanzees. Not that interesting compared to all the bird and reptile information they used to have.
Currently the zoo is trying to get some approval into the usage of the old seal pool as a new exhibit, plans are for Lemurs and a kids playground area. Aims for a visual behavioural interaction focus. Black & White Ruffed Lemurs I believe sourced from TWPZ. Also there are plans to eventually move the African Lion pride onto the African Waterhole Trail in the current Sun Bear enclosure. The Sun Bears most likely will be moved to Bethyl's enclousure following her death and see the current African Lion exhibit converted to a second Sumatran Tiger exhibit to house the current breeding pair individually. Keeping the Cats of Asia and Wild Asia geographics in mind.
Just had a look at Taronga zoos face book page today for the first time, while looking at the photos of animals at the zoo there is a nice photo of a Indian rhino standing in water up to it belly (which appears to be a wild animal), but the photo is labelled a Hippo (hope someone can change that)
Good point, if the animals happen to be desexed, then obviously not active within the breeding program, and are effectively for display purposes only. Given that there are such low numbers of individuals within the Aus program, the space they currently occupy at Taronga might be needed to bring in new bloodlines. The Transfer to a non-ZAA member might be a compromise for the improvement of the program generally.
Is anyone going to Taronga Zoo soon? Also, has the snow leopard exhibit actually received a physical renovation such as new plants, etc?
Not really, just a general scan of any new/interesting things or any animal antics/mating/playing going on
I would like to know what the new loop track opposite "Amazonia" and the top sky safari station is for. You can see it on the map here: Plan your visit to Taronga Zoo | Taronga Conservation Society Australia (between Amazonia and the top sky safari station on the right and the kangaroo/emu walkthrough on the right.) Cheers
Elephants, Sumatran Tigers, Lions, Bethyl (Kodiak Bear), Chimps, Gorillas and a special request for the exhibits in Serpentaria (Snake House)
