I just have a quick question for our Belgian members (or anyone who has visited recently). I was just looking at the map on Antwerp Zoo's website ( ZOO map | ZOO Antwerp ) and there is a large section of the central part of then zoo that is being renovated. Does anyone know what this development will be?

It is the entrance area, which will be moved into the zoo. So there will be a cafe and the flamingos will be visible before you enter the zoo.

At the age of 47 eastern lowland gorilla Victoria has died last saturday.

Now only 1 specimen of this species remain, Amahora (25), also at Antwerp Zoo.

    No chance whatsoever, I suspect.

A great shame, but at least the last one remaining is significantly younger than she was.

This news really got to me, as I was very near Antwerp only a month or so ago and I considered visiting but passed it up for a different zoo closer to where I was staying :( I am definitely going to attempt to go see Amahoro this year then!!
Slaap zacht Victoria. Rest in peace.

Antwerp is expecting a new Hippo-male for their 2 females. The new male will come from Zoo dÁmneville in France and is the 4 year old Bouli.

Bird species in the new cape buffalo aviary:

    40 helmeted guineafowl (Numida meleagris)
4 fulvous whistling duck (Dendrocygna bicolor)
4 white-faced whistling duck (Dendrocygna viduata)
5 African olive pigeon (Columba arquatrix)
11 guinea pigeon = probably Speckled pigeon (Columba guinea)
4 Senegal dove = probably Laughing dove (Streptopelia senegalensis)
    6 ring-necked dove (Streptopelia capicola)
29 black but will probably glossy ibis (Pseudibis falcinellus)
    2 hadada ibis (Bostrychia hagedash)
    9 abdim’s stork (Ciconia abdimii)
    2 hammerhead (Scopus umbretta)
    14 african spoonbill (Platalea alba)
    2 trumpeter hornbill (Bycanistes bucinator)
35 western cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis ibis)
    8 superb starling (Lamprotornis superbus)
    15 golden-breasted starling (Lamprotornis regius)
2 African grey hornbill (Lophoceros nasutus)
2 lilac-breasted roller (Coracias caudatus caudatus)
    2 violet plantain-eater (Musophaga violacea)
    2 purple-crested turaco (Gallirex porphyreolophus)
2 buffon’s green turaco (Tauraco persa buffoni)
    2 white-crested turaco (Tauraco leucolophus)
    2 Schalow’s turaco (Tauraco schalowi)

Apart from maybe the rather monotonous coloured pigeons, a pretty interesting collection. The only other species I was expecting were the mousebirds.

Thankfully the zoo is going further with it’s superb turaco collection (with also Fisher’s and great blue turaco in other aviaries; and additionally Emin’s turaco in Planckendael).
