Well I would like my heart surgeon to know a lot about the heart, instead of only a bit about many organs.
I think it’s a bit different with jobs, where you are paid to have a particular level of knowledge within a certain area.
"Quotable facts" are great for a trivia night but have little to do with expertise. The average long-term ZooChat member rarely chooses an avatar like "ChelonidExpert" and yet we do have such members ;-)
I prefer the term ‘enthusiast’ rather than ‘expert’. I would consider myself to know an abnormal amount about sun bears (certainly more than will ever prove useful in any sphere) , specifically regarding individuals held in European collections, but I certainly don’t hold a doctorate in the subject, more’s the pity.
Yes, I feel like I know quite a bit more than the average zoo-going public, but compared to some people on this site, I'm definitely not knowledgeable about zoos.
If I do get into a conversation with someone at a zoo, I make sure they or anyone within earshot is not a forum member, sniggering quietly at my nonsensical waffle.
There is usually someone who knows more than I do Knowledge comes with experience, and only time can provide it.
Continuous improvement is what I strive (and often fail at) for when working with animals. I would never claim to be a Zoo expert.
