Thanks for this list @steveroberts ! It's really interesting to have insight on the founders of our regional population, especially for a small, yet very fascinating species like the Golden Lion Tamarin.
Thanks for undertaking this monumental task @steveroberts. I have some information on New Zealand holdings, but will PM this to you rather than post it here so you can decide as the thread author how you want to work it in.
@Jambo @Zoofan15 @Zorro Thanks guys @Zoofan15 Thanks bro but please feel free to add yourself of course, just wanted to get it started am happy if anyone wants to contribute as much as they want (especially after 2008 where the studbook have pdf of stops, from there was hoping to gradually obtain info through our members and potential zoo email replies fingers crossed), was hoping this could just be the start of this thread and over the years if any of us ZC members find info on other Tamarins, Marmosets, Squirrel & Spider & Capuchin Monkeys in Australasia past and present we have a thread to discuss (-:
Sure, if you're happy for me to do so, I will post the info I have on New Zealand's Golden lion tamarins and Black-handed spider monkeys tonight. I have both current and historical information. Just wanted to check that was fine with you as usually the thread authors (including myself) prefer to update their own threads and I didn't want to interfere with any plans you had.
@Zoofan15 Totally get/relate with the author of thread feeling, but please feel feel bro, with this thread it was one that started with amigos such as yourself in mind to potentially contribute too if you didn't mind. With the thread the only plans that have so far was to write up info from the GL Tamarin studbook and later CT Tamarins studbooks over time (but happy for anybody to do as much of it too as they like) and by the time have reached the end of those studbooks that can find a way to bring it all the way to the present.
Cool, I'll start with New Zealand holdings and then give you a hand with Perth Zoo. @Jambo may like to help with Melbourne Zoo as well as would be familiar with their holdings.
Sounds good. I'll post some info regarding their Tamarins too. @steveroberts do you want their Black Handed Spider Monkey info as well?

Additional Notes/Info: The 2.2 Golden lion tamarin imported in 1964 were a breeding pair and their two offspring. Unfortunately they all died the year they arrived. Taronga Zoo were without Golden lion tamarins for 27 years until 1991, when they imported two females from Sweden. Jari’s cause of death appears to be birth complications given she gave birth to the second of twins the day she died (with the other born the previous day). Since the 2003 transfer in/out was only for a month following the animal’s import from Ireland, it’s reasonable to assume he was quarantined at Taronga; and while this was technically the last Golden lion tamarin held at the zoo, Taronga had made the decision to phase this species out with the death of their elderly male tamarin in 1999. Next up, Wellington Zoo! Aa
I also just remembered I have a book by Lou Grossfeldt (former Taronga primate keeper) which may have some info of interest, regarding this topic. I'll see what I can find.
Unfortunately, I don’t think the book would touch too much on them given the zoo weren’t very successful with this species. The original quartet all died within a year of arriving; and within Lou’s time at the zoo, the only birth ended in the death of the mother and both infants. It’d be interesting to know more details on this, but given the infants were born a day apart, it’s possible the birth was prolonged and required intervention. It’s a shame Taronga never persisted with this species. Since they held them, they’ve been downgraded from critically endangered to endangered, but new holders are always welcome. They’re not an easy species to successfully breed, but zoos like Adelaide who hold multiple pairs have been highly successful; as well a few zoos who’ve held a single pair.
@Jambo Oh please yes that would be great to see the info on the BH Spider Monkeys. Am hoping as time goes on this thread can be a place where as much background info on all the NW monkeys in our region can be documented for anyone who's keen to find out details about the individuals of all the Cebodidea species (albeit a long difficult task, but thats why have loved seeing what you guys have written so far). BH Spider Monkeys happen to be one of my personal favourites out of the monkeys of the world, and was sorry to see them go from Taronga and Perth. @Chlidonias @Jambo @Zoofan15 @Zorro (alphabetical lol) On another note, was having a look on the IUCN site a few nights ago and saw that the Varied White-Fronted Capuchins (cebus versicolor but until really recently classified as a subspecies cebus albifrons versicolor) are now classified as an endangered species but not sure if the WF Capuchins at Gorge and Halls Gap are indeed Varied or Humboldt's White-Fronted Capuchins (cebus albifrons) or potentially hybrids (including possibly of other WF Capuchin species, formerly considered subspecies)?
Wikipedia lists them as Varied white-fronted capuchin (Cebus versicolor). I’m willing to believe this is accurate as the species list was presumably compiled by someone with confidence i.e. the facility themselves. That said, the Exotic Mammals thread lists them as Cebus albifrons, which is the Humboldt’s subspecies - noting they may have come from Perth Zoo. It’s possible they’re a hybrid as if they were the endangered Varied subspecies, I’d have expected a greater emphasis on breeding them.
Perth's white fronted capuchins were identified as Cebus albifrons pleei, but I notice that this has been superceded by versicolor. The Gorge animals (and presumably Halls Gap individuals) are descended from the original PZ group. No hybrids. Again people are confusing the threatened status as being the important reason for continuing to manage a species. There was never any real interest outside Perth (with Gorge taking surplus individuals) in keeping White-fronted caps. The Australasian region turned towards the more numerous and generic Tufted caps in preference. The region has (or had) little interest in actively breeding South American primates beyond display (Golden lion and Cotton tops, excepted). It's a real pity as primate imports are relatively straight-forward compared to other animal groups.
Wellington Zoo - Golden Lion Tamarin Early History: 1.2 were imported in 1990: 1.0 Jamie Born at the National Zoo 19/03/1979 Sent to Adelaide Zoo 06/12/1985 Arrived at Wellington Zoo 06/09/1990 Sent to Taronga Zoo 18/02/1994 0.1 Alexis Born at the National Zoo 17/09/1979 Sent to Adelaide Zoo 16/08/1980 Arrived at Wellington Zoo 06/09/1990 Died at Wellington Zoo 24/10/1994 0.1 Kat Born at Adelaide Zoo 09/11/1989 Arrived at Wellington Zoo 06/09/1990 Sent to Auckland Zoo 20/06/2001 1.0 was imported in 1996: 1.0 Krefeld Born at Krefeld Zoo 19/01/1993 Arrived at Wellington Zoo 08/05/1996 Died at Wellington Zoo 01/05/2007 0.1 was imported in 2001: 0.1 Aide Born at Adelaide Zoo 20/10/1988 Arrived at Wellington Zoo 24/05/2001 Sent to Auckland Zoo 10/09/2007 Additional Notes/Info: The zoo’s first Golden lion tamarins were an 11 year old breeding pair (Jaime and Alexis) and their 10 month old daughter (Kat). The pair produced four litters together at Adelaide Zoo, but sadly ceased to breed upon arriving in Wellington. After four years without success, Jamie was returned to Australia in 1994, where he sired a litter in 1996 at Taronga Zoo. Alexis and Kat remained at Wellington and following Kat’s death later that year, a new male was imported from Krefeld Zoo. Given Kat was replaced by a 13 year old female (Aide) a year after the arrival of Krefeld, I’d assume they were incompatible. After Krefeld’s death, Aide was transferred to Auckland Zoo and the zoo discontinued with the species for six years. Next up, Wellington Zoo - recent history.
Wellington Zoo - Golden Lion Tamarin Recent History: After six years without holding Golden lion tamarin, Wellington Zoo imported 1.1 from the United States in 2013: 1.0 Orolito Born at Cleveland Zoo 30/03/2010 Arrived at Wellington Zoo 00/08/2013 Died at Wellington Zoo 00/08/2014 0.1 Clementine Born at Santa Ana Zoo 27/04/2010 Arrived at Wellington Zoo 00/08/2013 Still at Wellington Zoo Following the death of Orolito, Wellington announced the arrival of a male named Bronx in December 2015. He was born at the Bronx Zoo and came to Wellington Zoo via Auckland Zoo. Bronx had apparently died by Febraury 2017, when the zoo’s annual report for that year noted a male had arrived from Adelaide Zoo as a mate for Clementine: 1.0 Ronaldo Born at Adelaide Zoo 06/09/2013 Arrived at Wellington Zoo 00/02/2017 Still at Wellington Zoo Wellington Zoo have never successfully bred Golden lion tamarin.
That's simply because that version of the thread was started in 2015, the previous version was from 2014, and the original thread from 2010. The initial split of P. versicolor from P. albifrons was in 2012 but it took a while to take hold - and Neotropical primates are heavily oversplit anyway - so it never got updated in the thread. I'll make a note on the taxonomy in the thread as per the below: Just for further info for anyone else interested, a bunch of P. albifrons subspecies were synonymised with P. a. versicolor by Groves in 2001, including P. a. pleei. If P. versicolor is accepted as a valid split (most, but not all, authors do) then it is now monotypic.
