So they've packed gorillas, chimpanzees, orang-utans, gibbons, tigers, leopards, tapirs, deer, banteng, anoa, babirusa, pygmy hippos, cassowaries and a large lemur exhibit, amongst smaller exhibits, into just 2 hectares (the website does say it's only 2 hectares). Looking at that map, some of those exhibits must be dreadfully, dreadfully small. I'm thinking about the cassowary, chimpanzee and banteng enclosures in particular, although in trying to get a sense of proportion from the map, I wouldn't call a single exhibit generous in terms of space.
Really isn't too much important but... since March 25, the Fuengirola zoo changed his name for Bioparc Fuengirola.
I went to Fuengirola Zoo even before it opened! In 2001 I made contact with the building project manager (I remember his name being Gonzolo?) through the Zoo Biology newsgroup. I told him that I would be on summer holiday in that part of Spain and would love to see the zoo; he agreed even if the zoo wasn't complete, it was to open in the autumn that year if I remember correctly. I went there and Gonzolo showed me around, even allowed me to wander around on my own after the tour. It was my first totally new zoo so a memorable one. I took some photos during the visit and have scanned them. I'm currently in the process of scanning my zoo photos taken prior to getting my first digital camera (2003) so once I'm finished, I'll upload them, including those from Fuengirola. While a number of members here have seen the zoo in the past 10 years, I may be the only one who has photos of the exhibits in their initial stages.
@Baldur: It's really cool that you have those pictures, I can't wait to see them, thank you very much! oh! the correct name it's GonzAlo
Congratulations to Bioparc Fuengirola ( formerly Fuengirola Zoo ) to the successfull hatching of 2 Tomistoma ( Tomistoma schlegelii) in September 2011. Excellent work!
Congrats, continuity and perhaps a window onto an European break-through in Tomistoma management. Please other European holders take note here ...!
'Kina´ 3 years old Sumatran tiger female leaves Fuengirola a week ago, and goes to Belfast, for to make couple with ´Kabu´
Sumatran Tiger (1:1) have apparently left and been replaced with a White Tiger... Article below says they went to "another bioparc in Spain" but the only other Bioparc to my limited knowlage of Spanish zoo's is Valencia.. and last time I looked Sumatran Tiger were not native to Africa (which is what Valencia specialises in) So does anyone know where they ended up? Bioparc Fuengirola, Spain - not simply a zoo (Includes first-hand account)
To my knowledge both tigers (Sumatrans an white) are turned in the same exhibit. The only explanation has that the Sumatran tigers were moved to Terra Natura in Benidorm, park builded but not managed for Rainforest company.
Thanks for your help Keeper. I have now managed to confirm that they are being rotated on the same exhibit..
The Sumatran tiger pair were on display today, but I believe that Ankur, the male (and last[?]) white tiger, has left the collection for Maia Zoo in Portugal. I was also a bit surprised that the hornbill and parrot areas are being renovated, and that most of the amphibian collection seems to have gone.
Yes, the white tiger left the collection. The amphibian area was moved to Bioparc Valencia. And the hornbill and parrot areas are closed due to the enlargement of the zoo with a new area about islands and south america.
