Good news to start the year at Birmingham Wildlife Conservation Park. Our pair of Pygmy Slow Loris, Doris and George, are welcoming the arrival of twins! Born on January 6th, these babies represent a first breeding of the species at BWCP. We have also welcomed the arrival of a new female White-Naped Crane, to join our resident male. Our new breeding pair of Cotton-Top Tamarins can be seen in their enclosure, and will have access to the whole enclosure soon. We also celebrated the birth of a Prehensile-Tailed Skink at the end of last year, which can be seen in our reptile house.
Mrs Shav and I visited yesterday for the first time and were very impressed. All those lovely small mammals - douroucouli (with young), plenty of Callitrichidae, mouse lemur, red panda and ... binturong. The nocturnal house in particular was superb.
Had the pleasure of seeing them yesterday with a few others from this forum yet another superb breeding by this very under rated collection
I visited for the first time yesterday and was also impressed. Highlight for me was also the Nocturnal House, despite not seeing the Mouse Lemur, the Douroucouli were the most active ones I've seen along with the Pygmy Slow Loris. The place has the potential to be even better ( though being council owned I know there are issues with cost), with a few empty spaces for new species. Generally good enclosures, only unimpressive one was the Spider Monkey one, I found it odd that the Saki had such a large space by comparison! They were in their house the whole time anyway. The 'invertebrate' house was mostly reptiles, but no complaints from me! Overall though an enjoyable 2 1/2 hours, a bargain at only £6!
