Black rhinoceros reintroduced to Chad

    Six black rhinoceroses from Addo Elephant National Park in South Africa have been moved to Zakouma National Park in Chad, where they were wiped out by hunting in the early 1970s. Zakouma is run by South African-based NGO African Parks, who run parks and protected areas in nine African countries. The rhinos coming from Addo are of the south-western subspecies Diceros bicornis bicornis, as a functional replacement for the Western subspecies D. b. longipes that occurred in the area and is now globally extinct.

    For now, the rhinos are contained within protective bomas but once they have been released they will be monitored from the air and have a team of rangers tasked with keeping them safe.
