Mother of the young at Planckendael is Lina and this is her 5th young, father still unknown.

Two pieces of Twycross news; newest bonobo baby in Twycross has been named Moko (so Moko II as there is already a Moko living in France), and Kakowet, the last remaining USA born male in Europe has been PTS after collapsing in the enclosure :(

That is interesting- when I was there a fortnight ago he looked rather stressed in his behaviour and was doing a lot of screaming.

Someone said that since then they saw them as altogether as a single group- perhaps this event had something to do with his death- either before or after they were mixed together.

If that is the case then it will likely be the former, as he collapsed today apparently.

I believe at least one of the recent deaths at Twycross of a male common chimp(Ricky?) may have been the result of the stress/excitement of being mixed into the larger group. It seems this could be a similar situation for Kakowet, but he was very old of course.

Some years ago the silverback Mamfe, also at Twycross, had a heart attack and died, just a few weeks after another Silverback(Samsam) was temporarily moved in next door- this was in the now Chimp House holding the biggest group. After years of quiet living with his group he was suddenly faced with a 'rival'- I am sure the extra activity and stress this created was responsible for his death.

I believe that was Benji, as Ricky died before the large group was formed.

Also, it's so odd that Kakowet died due to them all being put in together, as I'm almost certain he's been put in with the whole group before. Very sad :(

Do note I cannot say that for sure as I do not know the details, it is just an educated guess it was something to do with that. It could have been totally unconnected of course -but something about the brevity of their announcement makes me a bit suspicious.

    A few updates:

    - I have confirmation from Apenheul that Kikongo and Ayebi were fathered by Zamba
    - Hortense, Zamba and Kikongo have moved back to Zamba's birthplace and Hortense's previous home (before Apenheul) of Planckendael. This was due to Zamba constantly getting into fights with Jill, the alpha at Apenheul.
    - Lina's baby has more or less been confirmed as male.
    - And female Lexi at Leipzig has had another baby!

This means that the groups are now:

    Planckendael 7.6
    Apenheul 2.7
    Leipzig 5.5.1

So Zamba mated with his mother Hortense and as a result Kikongo was born. Normally sons don't mate with their father. Vifijo, another son of Hortense, also mated with her. Strange behavior.

Is it to much to ask to put in bold the changes in the list of bonobo's? It would make it much easier to compare.

Thanks for the info you're ginving us!

Yes it is odd, but it's a known problem with Hortense. This, other than Jill's bullying of Zamba, is why he was often separated from Hortense's subgroup in Apenheul (so it was Jill, Monyama, Besede, Hortense, Kikongo and Bolombo in one, and Zuani, Makasi, Kumbuka, Ayebi, Yahimba and Zamba in the other). On the bright side, Vifijo has now been reunited with his mum!

And I've added the changes from the beginning of the year in bold, so that encompasses:

    - The births of Yanola, Moko II, Kolela, Lina's son and Lexi's offspring at Stuttgart, Twycross, Planckendael and Leipzig

    - The death of Kakowet at Twycross

    - The transfers of Hortense, Kikongo and Zamba from Apenheul to Planckendael

Haven't posted here in a while, so here are some updates:

    - Lina's son has been named Rubani
    - Lexi's baby has been confirmed as male and named Tayo
    - A couple months back Bashira gave birth to her first baby, who I believe is female (not verified yet). This brings the Frankfurt group's numbers up to 6.12, the total German population up to 25.42 and the European population up to 48.73

Update to the Apenheul troop: Kikongo was actually fathered by Bolombo, making Kikongo Bolombo's first son :)

EDIT: and a trusted source has informed me that Ayebi's paternity still isn't known.

Alpha female in Leipzig is LEXI. I am not absolutely sure about Frankfurt and Romagne.
