I read a very short article in BBC Wildlife magazine about a proposed rainforest aquarium in Kristiansand, due to open 2010. They wish to import a pair of Amazon river dolphins, which is being opposed by the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society. There is only one individual in captivity at the moment, in Duisburg. Does anyone have any further information about this?
There are no female captive bred individuals Next to the one in Duisburg, only Valencia Aquarium in Venezuela keeps boto in captivity and they did manage to breed. I believe they had 4 young sofar, all from the same pair and as far as i remember they where all male and one died very quickly, and one died after a few years... The rest are all still alive and performing shows. From what i'm understanding on the net, the Kristiansand aquarium "would like" to keep boto. I very highly doubt they would get their hands on any though...
A planned tropical zoo in Denmark focusing on South- and Central America also want's to keep boto. This project is called Tropebyen Slagelse (Tropebyen = Tropical city)
It would be very cool with botos in Scandinavia, but i'm not so sure that it will happen. But that tropical zoo in Denmark, it looks really cool. BTW, how old is the boto in Duisburg Zoo??
duisburg also had plans for new boto as did an american zoo a year or 2 ago. but animal rights groups don't really like the idea.
Now lives in Duisburg 1,0 Boto. Its to difficult to import other Botos, so they decided to buy Manatee's when the Boto is dead.
Duisburg imported 5 Botos from the Orinoco river system in 1975, so the remaining one is about 34 years old (as far as a I know this one was juvenile when captured).
