Yes, I'm playing with that idea in my mind, though there are no specific plans yet. But anyway thank you for your offer. It would be great and an honor to meet another zoo enthusiast with local knowledge. I will let you know immediately if this plan becomes real (could be the case in autumn, when the covid situation will maybe less dramatic again and closed areas of Budapest Zoo will open again). Not to forget: Thank you for your quick reply too
The hand-rearing of bats is a good example of conservation. The bats don't take up much space and are released into the wild when they can survive there.
The money for the biodome ran out, construction is accompanied by political debates between leaders of Budapest and the FIDESZ government.. The zoodirector retired because of the case. If the Pannonia Park will complete, which I strongly doubt, probably will be bonobos. Following animals will in the Biodome probably: Indian elephant White/One-horned rhino Maybe Nile hippo Sloth bear Bonobo Javan lutung Chevrotain Binturong Clouded panther Fishing cat Porcupine Hyrax Asian small-clawed otter Bat-eared fox Californian sealion/South African fur seal Caribbean manatee Waterfowl Monitors Crocs Sharks and rays Fish
Impressive species list. Are any outdoor exhibits planned ? After Wroclaw is keeping Nil hippos just indoors, I would'nt wonder if Budapest would keep Elephants and rhinos indoors only. Why not, if the indoor exhibit is big enough. What will happen to the historical Elephant house, should the Hippos leave it ?
As i understand it. The Biodome will be next to the outdoor enclosure of the elephants. Like Jungola in Wildlands.... The big question is will it be finished at all and will everthing be build as it was originally designed or will corners have to be cut
Yes, the following species will have outdoors : Indian elephant Rhino Sloth bear and ebony leaf monkey Sealion or fur seal Bonobo Asian small clawed otter Maybe Crocodiles I don't know what will happen to hippos. Just one thing is sure: they will stay in Budapest.
Won't be finished at all. The zoo's new economical leader investigated that 20 billion HUF(60 million Euro, 70 million USD) is needed to complete Pannonia Park completely. Mayor of Budapest and the FIDESZ government either doesn't want to give more money for the project.
I do have some doubts as to how the new business administration manager came to conclude this "phantom" guesstimate for a building project. My questions: What was the original budget and project brief for the building work? How much of the building work has been finished now? How much as yet to be completed? How did the whole project go over original budget and why?
1. Budget was 32 billion HUF, implementation is almost similar to project brief. 2. Around 80% but the almost full money given by EU and government ran out. 3. Nobody knows that how much money need to build the minimal project. It's maybe around 5-10 billion HUF. 4. This is a mystery too, nobody knows anything. Maybe managers of the Zoo and/or the contractor stolen it, but it's only a hypothesis. This is Hungary
Thanks for your comments. They seem to confirm that the claims made by this new manager are probably a bit too "wild" as I can hardly believe that with 75% building work completed completion would cost more than the original 32billion HUF (20billion ... still needed). If Hungary still had an independent judiciary and credible political system it would be worthwhile to have an enquiry into potential corruption and defraud. I think the authorities at the helm in Municipality themselves need to be under review too as it is public monies and that no one would know anything is another beggar's belief.
Okay, but the contractor costs 62 billion HUF up to now, so this is an incredible rise in the West. Now it looks like the Pannonia Park's full budget will be 62+ 5-20 billion HUF. I know it sounds strange, but it's usual in Hungary. Btw Hungary named Absurdistan by some of Hungarians. I like my country, but I think it's a very good word for Hungary's actualities(not just for the political actualities). But it's offtopic...
Pannonia Park will became more expensive with 200 million HUF due to a well contaminated with bacteria
