Was studying this old map from before the year 2000. And noticed these two strange species in the bush. Hornsbills and butterflies? Any records on these?
I have heared a pair of hornbills was kept in the bush untill they started nesting and then feeding their young with other inhabitants of the bush (anolisis and eggs and youngsters of other birds). After that, a single youngster was kept for a short period untill they were completely removed. The area surrounding the crocodiles also kept hummingbirds for a few years. Wouldn’t surprise me if some butterflies were in there as well at some point.
Butterflies were freeflying, I think throughout the Bush for a short period in the beginning, but they were too tasty. In the early years of the hall invertebrate and reptile diversity was much higher then now, bu obviously not all species adapted well to life in such an experiment.
Some Aardvark transfers are currently being planned: - The current breeding male will move to Frankfutrt. - 1.1 Aardvark will come from Berlin, these animals haven't bred successfully yet, so hopes are that changes. - 0.2 a mother with the last young will move to Kerzers in Switzerland. 2 old females will remain in Arnhem for the remainder of their lives. Aard(varken)verschuiving in Koninklijke Burgers’ Zoo! This probably means there will be more transfers throughout Europe.
There is already an ESB (European Studbook) for the Aardvark, coordinated at Burgers' Zoo. For the list of EEP's and ESB's see https://www.eaza.net/assets/Uploads/CCC/March-2019-Population-Management-Programmes-Overview.pdf
When and how did they? Because I seem to have missed that one. I'm really sorry about not knowing this.

Elephant Rekka was euthanized today. She came to Burgers' Zoo in 2007 after being confiscated from a circus, she was approx. 53 years old. This leaves Burgers' with one other elderly elephant female, on facebook they said they were trying to find another (elderly) female to keep the remaining elephant company. We nemen helaas afscheid van olifant Rekka
Some small updates from today: - A new Golden-bellied mangabey has arrived, they now keep 5 individuals. - The Striped basilisk in the Mangrove was laying eggs today. The new enclosures for lemurs, squirrel monkeys and coati look very nice and are not oversized. I am however surprised by the large amounts of bare ground around the enclosures, there would have been quite some potential to create something more...
The mangabey is a female from Africa Alive!, leaving said collection with a mother and daughter pair.
