A baby western lowland gorilla was born earlier today! Parents are Dossi and Jasiri. The African Rainforest building will be closed to the public to allow time for the group to bond.

The zoo is running a naming contest for the gorilla infant. Unfortunately they wont let you see the names, their meaning or vote unless you donate. Personally I like it better when everyone is allowed to participate regardless of their finances. More inclusive that way.

Calgary Zoo just posted a new map of their 2023 vision for Canadian Wilds on Facebook. The $31 million project will see brand-new or renovated exhibits for Polar Bears, Wood Bison, Woodland Caribou, Whooping Cranes, Prairie Dogs and North American River Otters. The new 'Bugtopia' playground, built in 2021, is also located in the Canadian Wilds section of the zoo.

Absolutely heartbreaking news out of the Calgary Zoo today. 6-year-old western lowland gorilla, Kimani, was noted to be not herself with low energy and appetite. They took her in for bloodwork and other test and based on that she had an emergency CT. The scan showed a form of paediatric liver cancer that has metastasized to her lungs and mediastinum. While they are looking in to treatment options, they are currently supporting her nutrition and fluid balance, and then will address the next steps. Unfortunately palliative care seems to be the most likely route that will be taken. Devastating news for the zoo, the gorilla troop family and the gorilla population in general.

The zoo has begun allowing the birds to go back on display both indoors and out as they deem its safe enough for each species. Thankfully the cases of avian flu are dying down. Hopefully all zoos across North America will be able to put their birds back on display soon enough.

The zoo has sadly confirmed that their only option for gorilla, Kimani, who is battling cancer is palliative care. They are doing all they can to ensure her last days are as positive and enjoyable as possible until they have to make that undesirable decision. Currently she has perked up some and is able to spend some time behind the scenes with her family and occasionally venture outside with them.

A pair of Great Grey Owl chicks hatched just over a month ago at the zoo for the first time since 2018. The sire is the zoo’s male, Benjen, while the mother of the chicks is unknown and could be any of the zoo’s three adult females. However, one of them, Catelyn, has stepped in as the main female protector of the chicks.

A one-year-old male rock hyrax named Kenickie has arrived from the San Antonio Zoo. He has been successfully integrated with the three females already at the zoo.
