I wouldn't discount African buffalo from North American collections.

I know this is an old conversation, but why does the AZA want to phase out cape buffalo?

Phase outs are usually for a number of reasons- lack of genetic diversity, lack of interest (either by the public or by the institutions keeping them), etc.

I'm sure you'll be glad to know that Cape buffalo are no longer an AZA phase out. Every institution with them is breeding them.

I could see zoos phasing them out due to their aggression. But I am glad to see they aren't being phased out.

Yeah. But elephants and hippos are known to be more aggressive, and zoos keep them, so I wouldn't see a use for getting rid of cape buffalo.

Good point. Maybe I'm derailing the thread with this, but how common are water buffalo in the USA? Are they a phaseout species?

fun fact: water buffalo are farmed in the USA, albeit not to the same degree as other livestock.

Not sure. I know they're around but I've only seen them in one non-AZA zoo over here.
