Cape May county zoo geriatric animals: 1.River otter:Annie,17 2.Howler monkey:Ghelfling,25 3.Giraffe:June,26 4.Red Fox:Marc,14 5.Goat:Lee,17 There are definitely more, just wanted to name a few! Animals are living longer in zoos due to the great care they receive despite being kept in a smaller space.
What happened to the black headed ibis? Plus I agree the website is awful. Many animals that are no longer there are still on website, also the zoo exhibits A LOT more animals than what it says on the webpage.
I don't know, but it wasn't there when I visited I think last summer. The website says it was born in 1984 I believe which by now would be way beyond an ibises lifespan.
The zoo has a new baby Burchell's Zebra. Meet the newest addition to the Cape May County Zoo. Help name her. They finished construction on the American Black Bear exhibit and will be eventually moving them out of the former Amur Tiger exhibit. The Bald Eagle exhibit under construction. The former Reeves' Muntjac/Duck Exhibit is under construction. The Laughing Kookaburra and Cotton-headed Tamarin exhibits are under construction. The Black Swan/Duck exhibit is gone and is now a field.
Cotton-top tamarin born at the Zoo : Endangered baby monkey is first born at N.J. zoo in nearly 20 years
The zoo has brought back Capybaras after a few years of not having them. Budette and Mikey live in the pond exhibit with a boardwalk near the entrance to the savannah with a Ruddy Shelduck, Mallards, Black Swans, Pond Sliders, a Painted Turtle, and Northern Red-bellied Turtle.
The Black Swans are now with the Capybaras and the Reeves' Muntjac, Kirby, was sent to the Turtle Back Zoo to breed.
Pot-bellied Pig Holstein Cattle Goat (various breeds) Dromedary Bactrian Camel White-tailed Deer Llama Alpaca Elk American Bison Reticulated Giraffe Scimitar Oryx Ankole-Watusi Burchell's Zebra Eastern Bongo (off exhibit)
They've been off exhibit for a year or two now and it's because they got a new male zebra and he would have been to aggressive with them.
I visited the zoo today and here are some updates: The coati exhibit was empty and the sign is gone. Their single coati is elderly, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he passed away. The bongo are back on exhibit with schmitar-horned oryx. The watusi were nowhere to be found. The kookaburra was not on exhibit and the sign is gone. The zoos lone kookaburra is 23, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he passed away or if he’s off for the season.
Sad to hear about the coati, but at least the Bongos are back. Also, the kookaburra wasn't on exhibit in the summer either, but I wasn't sure if it was because of the construction there. Did they finish expanding the kookaburra's former exhibit?
I just found out some updates when I asked the zoo on Facebook: The coati is inside for the winter. The kookaburra exhibit is done and the kookaburra is still there, I’m sorry but the zoo said that I was probably referring to the former caracara exhibit, and I probably was. Additionally, Lee the Pygmy goat died this year. He was 17 years old and the zoos oldest goat.
Updates: -The cow is now sharing the goat yard during the day for socialization and she goes back in her own yard at night. Sid you visit later in the day, we may see her in her own yard. -The paths to the outdoor reptile exhibits and small aviaries along the bird house are blocked. Should be due to colder weather and the animals are off for the season. Should return by spring -You cannot feed the goats/cow and the binoculars along the African Savanna Bridge and other locations in the zoo do not work. This should be the zoo taking extra precautions associated with COVID-19. -Didn’t see the following animals at all: -ring tailed lemur -silver fox -de Brazzas monkey -ankole watusi -laughing kookaburra -brown-nosed coati -outdoor reptiles and bird aviaries along World of Birds The lemurs, de Brazza monkeys and watusi were probably inside due to the cooler weather. The silver fox is sometimes hard to find when she’s on her top platform so she was probably just on the platform. The kookaburra is still there, I didn’t see it because I just forgot to go to the correct exhibit. The coati is inside another building for the winter. The outdoor reptiles and birds will probably not come out until spring.
