A nice piece of news to mark my 1000th post on ZooChat!

Zoos Victoria recently released six captive-bred Eastern Barred Bandicoots into the wild. The Facebook post didn’t mention which zoo the bandicoots came from but considering natives are Healesville’s speciality I thought I’d place the news in this thread.

Actually no, EBB’s are bred at Melbourne and Werribee. Also I believe some of the animals in this release were supplied by Serendip.

By released ‘into the wild’ do they mean into predator-proof enclosures such as the one at Hamilton Parklands?
I volunteered at Hamilton in Jan 2018. We trapped 9 bandicoots, 6 males and 3 females. The 3 females (they were hoping for 4) went to Werribee to join the breeding program.

They were released at the Woodlands Historic Reserve in Victoria, where a 400 hectare area has been fenced as an Eastern Barred Bandicoot Sanctuary.
