Of course, even Bristol pales into comparison with Wilhelma in Stuttgart!

That said, this is because Wilhelma is still just as much a botanical garden as it is a zoo.

    Brings back memories!

The first couple of shots are the young Lowland male Gorilla 'Jason'.

A couple of shots of the Eastern Lowland(s) indoors too but very dark.

good film of Polar Bears and Sealions too. Brings home just how Sealions are a significant loss in many of our Zoos nowadays.

The absence of gorilla is a major weakness of Chester's current collection.

If by 'gorilla' you mean 'hippo' then I agree. :D

    I did say "a", not "the" ... :)

The key 'missing species' is, of course, binturong. ;)

I know that many people disagree with my view that the gardens are much nicer nowadays. All that garish formal bedding did nothing for me. I like the variety of Glorious Grasses, the Memorial rock garden, the canal side garden and so on.
The dark footage of Eastern gorilla 'Noelle' splashing in the indoor moat in the Tropical House struck a chord with me, as I have just scanned a black and white photo of her doing this. I will post it soon.

S'alright, I'm just being a mischievous ungulate fan!

In truth, the two are probably linked - if any kind of version of the old 'Heart of Africa' project ever appears I can't imagine it wouldn't have gorillas and Pygmy Hippos. (I'd personally like to see 'big' hippos but I accept that Pygmies are probably more likely and certainly more conservation-dependent).

Have to say - I prefer the current style as well, though I might have kept the fountain lawns as formal. It's certainly more fitting with the zoo's ethos to spend time, money and effort (not to mention water) on gardens that reflect plants in the wild, rather than garish bedding plants.

    +1.

In general I prefer the more natural look but I agree that the fountain lawns were much nicer with the bedding plants. They just look neglected these days.
