On a random note, google earth satellite imagery has been updated and shows the new lion enclosure, completed lemur enclosures and a roofless monsoon forest. Two other things I found interesting:
    1. The size of the off-show area on the northeast side of Caughall Road. There's even some new large grass paddocks. Any one know what's being held over there at the moment?
    2. Comparing the latest google earth satellite to one from 2003, the zoo seems almost unrecognisable in many areas. So much change in just 16 years. Its also grown up a lot in terms of tree cover, which is great.

Can you still go back and view old historical imagery on Google Earth? I remember looking back at Twycross Zoo over different years from above.

Yes you can. I have google earth pro for desktop, and on that version there's a little globe with a green arrow round it on the task bar. click that for the timeline to pop up :)

Out of interest does anyone have any information about Chester Zoo during WW2. I am currently doing a project about wartime zoos for my MA study and I am wondering if anyone knows of any significant animal coming to the zoo or deaths as a result of war, rationing policies, or just anything in this area? I already have quite a lot of stuff, but I am just looking for extra. Thank you in advance.

"Zoo Without Bars" by June Johns certainly refers to elephants arriving due to WWII and various safety measures. I'd assume that Chester will also hold copies of any newsletters/ Zoo News from that period.

'Our Zoo' refers to wartime feeding issues, if I remember correctly.

Visited the zoo today to see the elephant shrews were not there. Have they moved enclosure? Also the giant anteater has moved into the jaguar house. Does anyone know if it just the female and also why the move?

I don't keep up to date with rumours and speculation, or even news enough, but I overheard a couple of their volunteers remarking on how she "must be about to drop"

Well the jaguar house has no building work going on it or near it just saying it might be a reasonable thought

The Buffon's Macaw is (are?) in the old Hyacinth Macaw aviary outside the aye-ayes and Collared Hill-Partridges (and I think also the liocichla) are in the Rainbow Aviaries by the chimps. The Scarlet-rumped Tanagers are upstairs in the Tropical Realm. There is also a Cabot's in the magpie aviary outside the elephant house (as well as at the Rainbows). I think most of the others (besides those noted above) are off-show currently.

Anyone know if the zoo will be closed this weekend as the winds are expected to be as high as they were in the last storm to hit the area.

You're best off tweeting / contacting the zoo but I imagine they won't make a decision until the day before and based on any weather warnings issued at that point.
