The two enclosures which, for most of the last decade, held Cassowary and Servals (more recently Pallas’ Cats and Indian Muntjac) respectively are once again to be home to Cheetah from early next year. Cheetah Returning to Former Enclosure(s) by Indlovu posted 14 Dec 2019 at 8:55 PM
Visited the zoo today & there a few things to note: - Sangria has been put off-show & the male Goodfellow's tree kangaroo is now on display. - A new dusky pademelon has recently been born in the enclosure on islands. - A Lilac-breasted roller has moved in with the pink pigeon. - The giant otter outdoor enclosure is closed for renovations. - Posters have been put up saying that cheetah will be moving into the former pallas cat & muntjac deer enclosures towards the rear of zoo in Spring 2020 - can anyone shed any light on this? - 2 Lady Amherst's pheasants have been moved into the aviary by the red pandas.
Does this mean the Muntjac have now been moved to another area within the zoo or have they now completely gone from the collection? I'm hoping that last part isn't the accurate answer.
The current Cheetah enclosure is needed for another species. So the remaining Cheetah's are being moved
Looks like the muntjacs may be gone then, as the plan was to move them to Islands (possibly with the banteng?) and they haven't reappeared. Unless they're going, or have gone to, the new off-show area?
The Ladies were previously in the small enclosure next to the elephant house entrance. This now houses Himalayan Monals.
As of yesterday the monals are in the songbirds aviaries by the chimps. The aviary near the elephant house contains red-billed blue magpies and Cabot’s tragopans
What is going on with the current Cheetah enclosure if they are moving back to former old enclosures? Unless Chester are getting something else for the current enclosure??
The enclosure in the picture has, as far as I know in this order, been home to coyotes cheetahs red-bellied pademelons cheetahs servals cheetahs bush dogs servals Chilean pudu Indian muntjac Before the enclosure was built in 1950 the area was used for doneky rides. The other (ex cassowary enclosure) exhibit was built for cheetahs and has also housed twin-wattled cassowaries and Pallas's cats. The muntjacks have died.
Definitely interested to see what will be moving to the Cheetah enclosure then. The guess of painted dogs seems to make sense if construction is occuring in their part of the zoo.
What I don’t understand though is why they’ve made a big show/marketing effort about moving a well-placed animal into a lesser frequented area when there’s realistically nothing new to show?
