Hmm...how about: - Cape Town - Brisbane (what I read in another thread) - Macau (maybe an expansion on their current zoo-like attraction) - Hong Kong - Milan - Hanoi - needs a good zoo at least - Brussels - Lagos
Hong Kong has several zoos, including Hong Kong Zoo. Milan's closed in 1992. Hanoi and Lagos (assuming Portugal) also have zoos, and Brisbane has Lone Pine.
Yes, but Hong Kong has no large zoo. Hanoi zoo does exist but it really needs renovating (has 2.5 stars on TripAdvisor). And Lagos (Nigeria) has a population of 20 million and receives 1 million tourists, so I think it would need a zoo. Brisbane does have a zoo, but I would think it should have a larger zoo such as Taronga or Melbourne.
While Lagos is a fascinating city, energetic and intriguing, the idea that it is a major tourist hub is rather bizarre! Nonetheless, if properly run and properly financed, there is certainly a need for zoos in large African cities; unfortunately, at the moment, most such zoos are pretty poor.
"Cities in need of larger zoos" is a different question, though. I also think Ocean Park Hong Kong counts as a pretty sizeable zoo, with terrestrial and marine zones featuring golden snub-nosed monkey, Pacific walrus, manta ray, etc.
I can't imagine Lagos being a tourist destination. There's quite a bit of instability and at the moment the U.S. State Department has a travel warning. I mentioned it in my initial post, but I think one of the best candidates for a zoo would be Kahalui, Hawaii. It's a huge tourist draw on Maui. Although I'm sure Hawaii is very strict on what could be imported there, even though Honolulu does have a zoo.
Oh.Hong kong.My home country. What we have here:HKZBG(Monkey cage and bird avaries),Hong Kong park(bird aviaries),Kowloon park(bird aviaries),Kadorie farm(rescue center),Hong Kong wetland park(Mainly for environment and bird watching but have some animals in captive such as a crocodile and hong kong newt),and Ocean Park(which is basically a amusement park with aquarium and some special animals enclosure and charge very expensive). There is a zoo called Lai Chi Kok Zoo , but was closed in 1997 because of Ocean Park.
Lagos might not be too big a tourist destination, but it certainly does have a lot of visitors. It depends what you call a tourist, if it is a person who is visiting there and does not live there, then Lagos has a lot of them. The thread is titled cities without large zoos so Chicago would count because Lincoln park is small and Charlotte and Winston Salem have nothing at all.
The very large Brookfield Zoo is in Chicago (actually in a neighboring suburb, to avoid any argument about technicalities).
Corpus already has an aquarium, perhaps the largest in the state. I dunno if Corpus is big enough to support a large zoo alongside a large aquarium.
Thanks for the info. Texas has been discussed a lot on this forum. It's a pretty good climate for a zoo since warm weather species can be out most of the year.
Down my head I can list Wolfsburg, even though Hannover, Magdeburg and Walsrode (and Schonebeck if you desire) are less than 100 kms away from there. Wakefield in England as well (well same exemple as before, other close cities have zoos like Chester but Wakefield doesn't have a large zoo afaik), I'd tend to list Stoke-on-Trent as well. In Africa many cities, including capital-cities have no zoos or poor ones . I feel lucky to have Rabat not so far from me (well still far but it could be more) which has a quite good animal welfare imo.
In Africa a good deal of the countries don't even have zoos. Guyana and several countries and territories in the Caribbean have nothing.
