With the lists of former species from other zoos, I decided it was time to make one about Columbus! I know this list is incomplete, so please chime in with species you know the Columbus Zoo used to have if you know some that I missed. Pachyderms (old and new)- warthog, Nile hippo, Malayan tapir, African bush elephant, African forest elephant Old Herbivore/Carnivore Bldg.- gerenuk, lesser kudu, yellow-backed duiker, bongo, nilgai, chital, lesser rhea, giant anteater, marabou stork, white-cheeked gibbon Western part of zoo (including, but not limited to, the current Shores, Expedition Congo and Voyage to Australia and the Islands areas)- tiger quoll, banded palm civet, drill, emu, short-beaked echidna, giant panda (temporarily in 1992), golden monkey, insect building
Good catch! Thanks. I knew they were going to, but didn't know if they actually had yet. I usually don't go inside the Pachyderm Bldg. when I go to Columbus
They were one of many US zoos to acquire them, but only Brookfield displays them publicly (although Memphis used to as well).
These were fairly recent, weren't they? I think the sun bears were replaced with sloth bears and I remember seeing the musk deer there.
Gotcha... that sounds about right. I'll add scorpions (species unknown) and naked mole rats based on this map from 2000- Zoo Tails: Columbus Zoo Map from 2000
Oh thanks!!! I didn't know that... I knew about Nile Hippo, but not Pygmy. Or maybe I did and I mixed it up with Cleveland (which had Pygmy until 2006).
The Old Johnson Aquatic Center had Electric Eels and a display of fish from Lake Victoria, both invasive and native, if I remember correctly. Clouded Leopards were in the Night Hike.
Where was the old Johnson Aquatic Center? By the time I started going to the zoo it was long gone. And I think I remember clouded leopards... when were they there exactly? I want to say it was maybe 2010ish, 2012?
